Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling had terrific chemistry throughout their careers. That was especially true during the film, Crazy, Stupid, Love. The 2011 rom-com received strong reviews, while bringing in $145 million at the box office.

Behind the scenes, shooting the film was quite the task, especially from a creative standpoint. As it turns out, some of the most iconic lines and scenes from the film were completely improvised.

We’ll take a closer look at which scene was completely off-script, while also taking a look back at the Dirty Dancing scene, and how Emma Stone went into complete panic. So much so, that a stunt double needed to step in.

Emma Stone Ripped On Ryan Gosling During Her Audition For Crazy, Stupid, Love

According to filmmaker Glenn Ficarra, it was evident that Gosling and Stone were the perfect match from the start. Speaking with EW, Ficarra recalls several of the auditions being a little tense due to Gosling’s involvement. However, things were completely different once Emma Stone entered the room.

“We had narrowed down to a few incredibly talented candidates for Emma’s part. They all read with Ryan, [who] was off screen, and I think in most cases they were a little taken by Ryan’s presence, so nervous at the sight of Ryan. When Emma came in, she sat down, she was ready to go.”

Not only was Stone very comfortable during the audition, but she also managed to rip on Gosling, after he flubbed his first line.

Ficarra recalls, “Ryan walked in, immediately flubbed his first line, and she just laid into him, like, “Oh, you’re killing this buddy.” She was the only one not to be intimidated by him, and in that moment John and I knew, “All right this is it, she’s right for the part.”

The chemistry was evident from the start, and that continued during the film.

The Directors Got Rid Of The Script During Ryan Gosling And Emma Stone’s Scene Talking In Bed

Following the Dirty Dancing scene, Gosling and Stone’s characters bond in bed. Turns out, this was completely organic and shot on the spot, without a script.

Ficarra discussed going off script, and how those on-set thought they were mad doing so.

“That was all improv. They did a couple scripted lines interspersed. The crew, I think, thought John and I were crazy because we said we were going to throw the script away.”

“We were going to stick them in a bed together and keep shooting. We shot for a really long time. We let them go, we let them talk about whatever they wanted, we poured a couple of drinks, and they just riffed. They really amuse each other in real life.”

Ryan Gosling was also taken back, as the actor wasn’t entirely sure he was doing things correctly during the scene.

“At one point, I think it was Ryan came up to me, he was like, “Is this okay, what we’re doing? I’m not sure.” I was like, “No, no, it’s going to be great. Don’t worry.”

Clearly, the magic formula worked, as the duo was able to shoot yet another memorable scene.

Emma Stone Was Terrified To Shoot The Dirty Dancing Scene In Crazy, Stupid, Love

We can add the Dirty Dancing scene as yet another piece of improv during Crazy, Stupid, Love. Though this time around, it was none other than Ryan Gosling’s idea. The actor made the pitch and although the scene is remembered and turned out to be great, Emma Stone wasn’t a huge fan of it all…

According to Stone speaking with Collider, she was incredibly nervous to shoot the scene.

“I was like, ‘I can’t do this, I can’t do this’ and my body just completely collapsed into him and kicked him in the throat—my bad [laughs]—but the screams of my panic are the screams they used in ADR overlaying the stunt double that he lifted. So I’m very, very grateful and to directors [Glenn Ficarra and John Requa] for making use of that terrible, terrible panic.”

Turns out, not every improvised moment was the easiest to shoot…
