France has earned a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup following a 3-1 win over Poland on Sunday, December 4.

Giroud’s opening goal a minute before half-time was his 52nd for his country, and it made him France’s all-time top scorer ahead of Thierry Henry who he had tied with before the match.

Kylian Mbappe gave France the second goal in the match after his shot in the penalty area went to the top corner of the post.  His second was even better, as he shifted the ball from left to right before curling a shot high into the opposite corner with Poland’s goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny, being unable to get a save.

Mbappe has now moved up to nine goals in just 11 World Cup appearances, and it is the second-most for a French player at the tournament.

Robert Lewandowski scored an added-time penalty which needed to be retaken after Hugo Lloris saved his first spot kick but was off his line early.

France who are the defending champions will play the winner between England and Senegal in the quarterfinal.
