Aaron Jones Placed on Injured Reserve Amid Latest Vikings Injury Woes

The Vikings suffered another injury blow on Tuesday.

Running back Aaron Jones has been placed on the injured reserve by Minnesota due to a hamstring injury, sidelining him for at least four weeks as reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Jones, 30, suffered the injury during the Vikings’ 22-6 loss to the Falcons on Sunday night.

Earlier this week, head coach Kevin O’Connell indicated that Jones was “likely down” for the upcoming game, prompting the team’s decision to move him to IR.

Jordan Mason is expected to slot in as Minnesota’s RB1 while Jones is out.

With Ty Chandler, the third-string running back, also sidelined by a hamstring injury, the Vikings are expected to add Cam Akers, who has spent parts of the last two seasons with Minnesota, to their practice squad.

The Jones news comes after the Vikings ruled out starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy for 2-4 weeks with a high ankle sprain.

Carson Wentz will take over the starting quarterback role in McCarthy’s absence. The Vikings also added veteran Desmond Ridder to fill the backup void.

“We’re definitely dealing with some adversity right now, for sure,” O’Connell said Monday.

Jones had five carries for 23 yards before suffering the injury on Sunday.

In Week 1, Jones had 23 rushing yards on eight attempts during the Vikings’ win over the Bears.

Last season, the veteran running back had one of the best seasons of his career, going for a career-high 1,138 yards on the ground with seven total touchdowns.

The Vikings will take on the Bengals, who also suffered a major injury hit on Sunday, losing star quarterback Joe Burrow to a turf toe injury for at least three months, during Week 3 in Minnesota.
