Affordability Takes Center Stage: Voters' Top Priority in Recent Election Revealed

In the 2025 election, voters turned out in significant numbers for the Democratic Party, with economic issues heavily influencing their choices at the polls.

Tuesday marked a landmark victory for Zohran Mamdani, who has been elected as New York City’s first Muslim mayor. His campaign resonated with many New Yorkers through a strong focus on making the city more affordable, a promise that clearly helped secure his electoral success.

Ken Martin, Chair of the Democratic National Committee, emphasized that escalating prices were a key factor in the Democratic victories across several states, including New Jersey, Virginia, California, Georgia, and Mississippi.

“You deserve an opportunity to actually get ahead in life, not just get by,” Martin remarked, highlighting the economic struggles facing many Americans. “And unfortunately, in this Trump economy, too many people are just barely getting by.”

Voters are concerned about rising prices, rising grocery costs and overall higher cost of living, and they want change, which is what they voted for last night.

In a recent Decision Desk HQ poll, 39% of those surveyed said they are worse off financially than they were this time year, and 40% said they have had to make some kind of financial sacrifice to make ends meet.

‘s Brian Entin hit the road to talk with voters and heard the same thing.

“[The economy] feels terrible. I love to shop, I feel like I’ve pulled back my spending significantly because I’m like, well, I need to pay rent. I need to make sure that all of my necessities are taken care of,” one voter said.

One truck driver echoed the sentiment, noting that truckers haven’t seen significant raises in salaries in decades, but prices have risen dramatically.

Across the board, the economy was top of mind for voters.

In Virginia, 6 in 10 voters said federal government cuts affected their finances “a lot.” In New Jersey, 7 in 10 voters called property tax rates a major problem,6 in 10 New Yorkers said utility bills were too expensive, and 7 in 10 voters said the cost of housing where they are is a “major problem.”
