The Baker County Sheriff’s Office said John Robert Akridge III faces a murder charge and two attempted murder charges after a shooting at a Macclenny home Feb. 21.

BAKER COUNTY, Fla. — A man is in police custody facing a murder charge after a month-long investigation into a triple shooting in Baker County in February, according to investigators with the Baker County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).

Investigators said Friday 18-year-old John Robert Akridge III was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, along with two counts of attempted murder, in a triple shooting in Macclenny on Feb. 21, 2025, that left a man dead and two people injured.

BCSO said the shooting happened on Hilcrest Drive in Macclenny, telling First Coast News at the time that seven people were “involved” in the shooting.

A 20-year-old man was killed and two others were taken to the hospital, suffering non life-threatening gunshot wounds.

“These are young people,” Baker County Sheriff Scotty Rhoden said in February. “There are young adults, and we encourage them, altercations are going to happen, but when you bring firearms to the altercation, it’s usually someone innocent that loses their life or somebody loses their life, and you cannot bring that individual back.”

Deputies named Akridge a person of interest in the case on Feb. 22.

BCSO said in a statement they spent the past month following up on leads, gathering evidence and conducting interviews to determine what happened, and Akridge was arrested for his involvement in the shooting.

Akridge, who BCSO said was already in jail for a gun charge stemming from the shooting, was charged with murder and attempted murder, as well as discharging a firearm in public.

“Sheriff Scotty Rhoden and his deputies remain steadfast in their commitment to eradicate gun violence in Baker County, and he is grateful for the hard work and dedication put forth by his team of detectives who were able to bring forth a quick resolution to this case,” BCSO said in a statement.
