Luis Oscar Ocanto, 38, faces allegations of murdering his former girlfriend in North Charleston on the same day he was stopped by police in a stolen vehicle in Kingsland, authorities report.

KINGSLAND, Ga. — Authorities in Southeast Georgia apprehended a man linked to a South Carolina murder case on Monday morning during a routine traffic stop, as confirmed by the Kingsland Police Department.

The incident unfolded on I-95 South when officers pulled over a speeding vehicle. Upon further investigation, they discovered the car, a 2021 Kia Sorento, was reported stolen from North Charleston, South Carolina, and was being driven by Luis Oscar Ocanto.

Following Ocanto’s detention, the Kingsland Police Department was notified by the North Charleston Police Department about his suspected involvement in the murder of his ex-girlfriend earlier that day. Reports suggest Ocanto allegedly committed the crime at her apartment before fleeing in her vehicle.

Police revealed that the vehicle contained several items belonging to the victim, as well as other evidence crucial to the ongoing homicide investigation.

Ocanto remains jailed in Camden County in relation to the stolen car for now. KPD says more charges through North Charleston are pending.
