PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Lake of the Commons in Tualatin, Oregon, was awash with creativity and color on Sunday afternoon as boaters donned costumes ranging from Captain America to Guy Fieri—and even a hot dog—during a vibrant event.

These spirited participants put on their finest Halloween attire to paddle across the lake in giant, hollowed-out pumpkins, all part of the 2025 West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta held in Portland.

Among this year’s competitors, Parker Johnson stood out by dressing as the Very Hungry Caterpillar, a choice that earned him first place in the costume contest.

“While driving with my family, we brainstormed ideas, and my dad came up with a caterpillar eating its way out of a pumpkin,” Johnson shared with Nexstar’s KOIN. “I thought it was a great idea, so I decided to go for it.”

Celebrating its 21st year, the regatta challenges participants to not only finish the race but also skillfully navigate their pumpkin boats to avoid taking on water.

The giant pumpkins are supplied by the Pacific Giant Vegatable Growers. Growers and regatta sponsors are chosen as paddlers by a lottery. The regatta supplies a giant pumpkin, which comes already hollowed-out; paddle, and life vest. Family-friendly costumes are among the requirements, and all paddlers must be at least 18-years-old.
