CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order in response to the possible deployment of the National Guard.
The “Protecting Chicago Initiative” order demands that President Donald Trump stand down from “his threat to deploy National Guard,” according to a press release from the city.
Johnson said the order is in response to a “credible threat” that the deployment of troops will happen in a couple of days.
The mayor said the city did not have any specifics on the possible arrival of military in Chicago.
The order also affirms that Chicago police will remain a locally controlled law enforcement agency under the city.
“We do not want military checkpoints or armored vehicles on our streets and we do not want to see families ripped apart. We will take any action necessary to protect the rights of all Chicagoans,” Johnson said in a press release.
Under the executive order, the mayor directs the city to pursue all legal and legislative avenues to stop the deployment.
The order calls also calls on federal law enforcement and U.S. Armed Forces personnel to abide by the policies laid out in municipal law.
Some of the policies include: law enforcement cannot conceal their identities while performing their duties; activated body cameras must be worn when interacting with a member of the public; and personnel must display which agendy they are with including their last name, badge number.
Earlier this week, the Naval Station Great Lakes confirmed that it is preparing to host federal immigration agents.
The enforcement operation is expected to begin next week.
