The Navy said it suffered a “loss of confidence” in Commander Sarah Quemada’s leadership of Naval Information Warfare Training Group Norfolk.

NORFOLK, Va. — A Norfolk-based commanding officer was relieved of her duties due to a loss of confidence in her ability to command, the U.S. Navy announced Thursday.

Cmdr. Sarah Quemada led the Naval Information Warfare Training Group (NIWTG) Norfolk, which is a subordinate command of the Naval Information Warfighting Development Center command. Quemada had assumed command of NIWTG in 2023.

“The Navy maintains the highest standards for commanding officers and holds them accountable when those standards are not met,” the Navy said in a news release. It offered no other details as to why there had been a “loss of confidence” in Quemada’s leadership abilities.

Quemada was temporarily reassigned to Naval Information Forces, while Capt. Steve Mcintyre was temporarily assigned as NIWTG Norfolk’s new commanding officer until a permanent replacement can be named.

According to its website, NIWTG Norfolk “advances the fleet’s information warfare warfighting (IW) readiness through operational-based training, highly experienced IW deployers, and IW mission data management in support afloat and ashore commands to deliver decisive advantages in the maritime domain.”
