PORTER COUNTY, Ind. — A man allegedly wielding a chainsaw at his neighbor and a police officer was arrested Sunday in Northwest Indiana.

Michael Barrett, 61, was taken into custody after police responded to the 200 block of Skyline Drive, located on the west side of Valparaiso shortly before 4 p.m.

Police believe Barrett was allegedly walking up and down the street with a chainsaw breaking items in the roadway. He then allegedly lunged at his neighbor with the chainsaw in a jabbing motion.

Barrett then retreated inside his residence, according to police. While the neighbor was speaking to police, Barrett allegedly exited his residence with the chainsaw, started it and swung it around on his porch, police said.

Police then began watching the street, expecting Barrett to come out of his residence again. He did shortly after 5 p.m., and allegedly cut down his mailbox as an officer approached.

As an officer exited his vehicle, Barrett shut the chainsaw off and began retreating toward his residence.

“Don’t do it,” Barrett said as the officer reached for his taser, according to police.

Barrett did not allegedly put down the saw as instructed and the officer pulled out his gun. He then surrendered and two “cutting weapons” were found on his person.

He was preliminary charged with invasion of privacy, a misdemeanor.

According to court records, Barrett has a jury trial next month on the charges of intimidation, criminal recklessness and resisting law enforcement.
