Driver of stolen car crashes into police vehicle in New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. () A New Mexico police officer was nearly killed after being struck by a man running a red light in a stolen car.

Andrew Sandoval, 39, was operating the vehicle at the time of the crash, according to the Albuquerque Police Department. Sandoval has a lengthy criminal history and was sentenced to 18 months of supervised probation for a burglary earlier this month.

The sergeant was taken to the hospital and did not suffer any serious injuries.

Sandoval is being charged with receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle and aggravated battery against a police officer. He could also face federal charges pending a search warrant on the stolen vehicle. The other passengers in the car are not facing charges.
