() The parents of missing 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro pleaded not guilty Thursday on charges of murder and filing a false police report.
Jake and Rebecca Haro both entered not guilty pleas in a brief court appearance. Jake Haro is being represented by a public defender and Rebecca Haro is being represented by defense attorney Jeff Moore.
A preliminary hearing was set for Sept. 17.
Jake Haro has said his wife, Rebecca, is innocent and loves her children.
On Aug. 14, Rebecca Haro reported Emmanuel missing, telling police she had been assaulted in a California parking lot and he had been kidnapped. As the search progressed, police later determined her story was false.
Both parents were arrested on Aug. 22. Investigators have said they believe Emmanuel had been abused over time and died sometime between Aug. 5 and Aug. 14. His remains have not yet been located.
Court documents revealed Jake Haro had a previous conviction for felony child cruelty, to which he pleaded guilty and was given probation and work release.
Haro told reporters he only pleaded guilty because he could not afford a lawyer to take the case to trial and that the judge told him nobody would believe him.
Both parents are being held on $1 million bond.
