“Ultimately, mental illness proved to be the one opponent from which Doug could not run,” stated Athletes First, the agency that once represented Doug Martin.

TAMPA, Fla. — The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers player, Doug Martin, was reportedly grappling with mental health issues at the time of his untimely death, as revealed by his representation agency. This tragic event unfolded following his arrest in California.

According to the Oakland Police Department, the 36-year-old was taken into custody early Saturday morning amidst an investigation into a home break-in. During the arrest process, Martin became unresponsive.

Authorities reported that while officers were attempting to detain him, a brief struggle occurred. Paramedics were promptly called to the scene, providing immediate medical attention before transporting him to a nearby hospital.

Despite these efforts, Doug Martin passed away at the hospital, marking a somber end to his battle with mental health challenges.

Following Martin’s death, Athletes First, an agency that represented Martin when he was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2012 NFL draft, issued a statement talking about his mental health.

“Doug battled mental health challenges that profoundly impacted his personal and professional life,” Athletes First statement said. “Ultimately, mental illness proved to be the one opponent from which Doug could not run.”

Through the statement, Athletes First requested privacy for the family.

“Doug’s parents were actively seeking medical assistance for him and had contacted local authorities for support. Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug fled his home during the night and entered a neighbor’s residence two doors down, where he was taken into custody by police,” the statement added.

Oakland police said that in following internal policies, the officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave.

The incident is being investigated by the Homicide Section of OPD, its Internal Affairs Bureau, the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.

Police and the city’s mayor said they reached out to the family.

Martin, originally from Oakland, lived in Stockton, where he played high school football. He was the 31st overall pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft after a standout career at Boise State. He rushed for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns as a rookie and was selected to the Pro Bowl.

Martin was named first-team All-Pro and made the Pro Bowl again after rushing for 1,402 yards and six TDs in 2015. He finished his career with 5,356 yards rushing and 30 TDs in six seasons with the Buccaneers and one with the Raiders. He also had 148 catches for 1,207 yards and two scores.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin,” the Buccaneers said in a statement Sunday. “Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.”

Martin was selected as one of the top 50 players in franchise history as part of the team’s 50th anniversary celebration.
