GOP Congresswoman: Holding Democrats Accountable Is 'Cancel Culture'

If you didn’t have the giant picture above, who would you think that headline pertains to? Ask yourself, which Republican congresswoman has consistently inserted herself into the public eye over the last year or so, time and again providing fodder to the left?

It’s probably the one who recently ran to CBS News to give soundbites to Face the Nation, undercutting conservatives trying to get a new House rules package passed. Oh, and the libertarians love her because she wants to legalize drugs.

Of course, I’m talking about Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC). Not content with trying to blow up the conservative revolution that overtook the House in early January, she’s now defending Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) because why not?

At a time when Republicans need to take no prisoners, this stuff (via Fox News) is incredibly frustrating.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., said Friday it would be hypocritical for Republicans to boot Rep. Ilhan Omar D-Minn., from the House Foreign Affairs Committee over anti-Semitic comments, and said doing so amounts to a form of “cancel culture.”

“There’s a First Amendment in this country. We don’t have to agree with everything that members say,” Mace said Friday when Fox News asked if she supported Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s vow to block Omar from the committee.

“I think we have to be very careful about what we are as a constitutional republic,” she said. “I am not a fan of Ilhan Omar. She’s an anti-Semite. She’s a bigot. She’s a racist. She’s a socialist. But that doesn’t mean that we cancel people in this country. Republicans don’t stand for cancel culture. And that’s essentially what this is.”

I am begging people in politics who desperately want to be seen as above the fray, including Mace, to learn what “cancel culture” actually is. It is not simply holding people accountable for the things they say and do. If that were true, every time someone got fired for cause, it would be “cancel culture.”

So what is “cancel culture?” It is when someone is unfairly targeted based on old statements or otherwise innocuous comments that were interpreted in the worst way. For example, if a person’s old social media posts were dug up for no legitimate reason and were used to get them fired from a job that otherwise had no relation to the comments that were made, that would be “cancel culture.” Or if someone makes a joke and people take it the wrong way, using it to get them exiled from polite society, that would also be “cancel culture.”

That is not what has happened with Omar. She has made anti-Semitic comments as a member of the House of Representatives (among many other insane things she’s said). She also continues to be largely unapologetic. We aren’t talking about a random person here. Politicians are held to a different standard because their existence in government relies on public opinion and perception. In that sense, they can’t really be “canceled.”

Mace knows better and worse, I don’t even think she believes what she’s saying. Rather, she’s just a contrarian within the party, and I think she does it for attention. She knows that committee assignments are not like getting fired from a job. No House member is entitled to a certain position, and Ilhan Omar is not being “canceled” from fulfilling the duties of her office. She’s just not being allowed on the most powerful committee in congress. That seems like fair treatment for a rabid anti-Semite who defends terrorists, does it not?

Democrats never do this. They don’t constantly try to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. They play the game, and they play it well. Meanwhile, Republicans fight each other over the dumbest stuff, with some being willing to screw over the party if it means raising their profile. If you want to know why the GOP loses, that’s why they lose.
