SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) — A 15-year-old boy was on a date with his girlfriend for Valentine’s Day when he was violently slain on Santana Row in San Jose, California, the boy’s family said.

A verified GoFundMe page identified the young homicide victim as David S. Gutierrez. San Jose police officers said they were alerted to a fight involving multiple people at 7:14 p.m. Friday on Santana Row, a popular area for shopping and restaurant dining.

Gutierrez was “attacked by a group of juveniles … while he was on a date with his girlfriend to celebrate Valentine’s Day. He was beaten and then stabbed in the heart. David fought for his life but didn’t make it to surgery,” the page states.

The boy died at a hospital from his stab wounds, police said. “The suspects fled the scene prior to police arrival and remain unidentified,” San Jose Police Department Sgt. Jorge Garibay wrote.

Law enforcement officials have not released the boy’s name.

Gutierrez was a member of Gladiators Boxing Gym in Redwood City, where children and adults train for competitions. The gym’s Facebook page states, “Rest in Peace, David S. Gutierrez. It is with a heavy heart that we share the tragic loss of one of our own. David S. Gutierrez, a 15-year-old member of Gladiators Gym, was taken from us far too soon. He was more than just a fighter — he was family, full of heart, determination, and a bright future ahead.”

The GoFundMe page was set up to help his grieving family pay for funeral expenses.

More violence flared in San Jose just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday in San Pedro Square, where a massive brawl broke out. When police officers arrived and attempted to break up the fights, some assailants fled, while others turned on the officers. Multiple officers were attacked before backup arrived. Eight people were arrested in connection to the brawl and they were booked into jail, police said.

SJPD is attempting to identify Gutierrez’s killer. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Van Den Broeck or Detective Estantino of the San Jose Police Department’s Homicide Unit by calling 408-277-5283. You can submit a tip anonymously by calling 408-947-STOP.

Mayor Matt Mahan said, “Whenever violence occurs in San Jose, we respond swiftly, professionally, and thoroughly to hold criminals accountable and keep our residents safe. Our police department is actively investigating both incidents, and I’m confident we will soon uncover the motives behind these acts and ensure justice is delivered.”

Gutierrez’s death is the third homicide in San Jose in 2025.
