Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas had seemingly announced he had come out as gay

Iker Casillas bizarrely claims he was HACKED two hours after now-deleted tweet said he was coming out as gay, in an apparent ‘JOKE’ in response to rumours about his post-divorce dating life with Carlos Puyol criticised for his role in inappropriate gag

  • The former Real Madrid goalkeeper took to Twitter to make the announcement
  • In a now-deleted tweet, Iker Casillas asked fans for ‘respect’ in lights of the news
  • The ‘announcement’ came a year after his split with wife Sara Carbonero
  • Former team-mate and rival Puyol quickly responded in support of the Spaniard
  • Casillas deleted the post and tweeted two hours after that he was ‘hacked’
  • Reports suggested the original tweet was in response to rumours over his post-divorce dating life

Former Spain stars Iker Casillas and Carles Puyol were slammed on Sunday as ‘beyond disrespectful’ for seemingly joking about coming out.

Casillas caused a social media stir when he tweeted, ‘I hope you respect me: I’m gay’, before his old international team-mate Puyol replied: ‘It’s time to tell our story.’

However, ex-Real Madrid goalkeeper Casillas deleted the post an hour later and went on to write: ‘Hacked account. Luckily everything in order. Apologies to all my followers. And of course, more apologies to the LGBT community.’

Former Barcelona defender Puyol also removed his reply and tweeted: ‘I have made a mistake. Sorry for a clumsy joke with no bad intentions and totally out of place. All my respect and support for the LGBTQIA+ community.’

The behaviour of the 2010 World Cup winners was condemned by Adelaide United left back Josh Cavallo, one of the few active male footballers to come out as gay.

‘Casillas and Puyol joking and making fun out of coming out in football is disappointing,’ tweeted the 22-year-old Australian. ‘It’s a difficult journey any LGBTQ+ people have to go through.

‘To see my role models and legends of the game make fun out of coming out and my community is beyond disrespectful.’

Cavallo’s post was retweeted by Blackpool forward Jake Daniels, who in May became the first active player in the UK to come out as gay since Justin Fashanu in 1990.

Spaniard Jose Enrique, the former Liverpool defender, responded to Casillas’ claim he had been hacked by tweeting: ‘Instead of apologise and recognise the mistake, rather lie to everyone.’

Ex-Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen also liked a series of tweets slamming Casillas and Puyol, including one which called them ‘pathetic’ and accusing them of ‘emboldening the homophobic attitudes that are already rife within football’.

Casillas’ initial ‘coming out’ tweet was ‘liked’ more than 250,000 times before it was deleted. As well as messages of support, dozens of homophobic comments also appeared.

The 41-year-old, who has 9.7million followers on Twitter, split from his TV presenter wife Sara Carbonero last year. His original tweet came a day after local media reported he was in a relationship with Spanish actress Alejandra Onieva.

Pride in Football, a network of LGBTQ+ fan groups in the UK, said: ‘Misjudged, ill-timed and disappointing. We should not be seeing “jokes” at the expenses of others in 2022.

‘That tweet has the chance to do a lot of damage. In recent months, we have seen three male professional players share who they are with us all.

‘Let’s hope the consequences of this tweet don’t make other male professional footballers think they can’t share who they are.’

Anti-discrimination campaigner Peter Tatchell added: ‘If this was intended as a joke, it is in very bad taste. It’s an insult to genuinely gay footballers to masquerade as gay for some kind of sick fun and thrill.’

Casillas retired from football in August 2020, six years after Puyol hung up his boots.
