The Jacksonville Icemen’s season opener might not have ended in victory, but the atmosphere was electric as over 13,000 fans packed the arena to show their support.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — On Friday night, the Jacksonville Icemen took to the ice at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena for their eagerly awaited home opener, attracting a massive crowd eager to kick off the season.

Although the final score was a 5-2 loss to the Atlanta Gladiators, the energy in the arena was undeniable as loyal fans came together to rally behind their team.

Fans of all ages thronged the venue, donning jerseys and waving blue glow sticks enthusiastically. For the Cabot family, the event was more than just a game; it was a cherished opportunity for family bonding.

“We’re huge hockey fans from the north, and supporting our hometown team here is something we absolutely love,” shared the family.

One highlight of the evening was the Reverb event organized by Word of Life Ministries. Retired Jacksonville police officer Michael Monts explained that the all-night youth gathering, with nearly 900 students, blends fun, faith and community.

“We’re talking middle school students preparing for adulthood, coming to hear a clear gospel message and be invited to accept Christ as their Lord and Savior,” Monts said. “That is a blessing.”

Fans like Cheryl and Mike Mitchell said it’s about the full live hockey experience.

“The sights, the sounds, the physicality. You don’t realize how fast hockey is until you watch it live,” he said. “There’s nothing like live hockey. If you haven’t been to an Icemen game, you’re missing out.”.

For the Jacksonville community, the Icemen are more than a hockey team, they’re a source of pride and togetherness.

If you missed Friday’s game, you have plenty of chances to catch the Icemen this month. There’ seven home games, starting with the South Carolina Stingrays Saturday night at 7 p.m.
