A spokesperson with the St. Marys, Georgia, Police Department said officers were responding to calls of “threats” at the Cumberland Oaks Apartments late Sunday night

ST. MARYS, Ga. — A Jacksonville man is dead after he was shot by St. Marys, Georgia, police officers following a “brief encounter” with them at a St. Marys apartment complex late Sunday night, according to a spokesperson with the St. Marys Police Department. 

Police spokesperson Lt. Ian Dent said in a statement officers responded to a report of “threats” at the Cumberland Oaks Apartments on Mary Powell Drive in St. Marys around 11:06 p.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived, they contacted 27-year-old Gregory Peter Paige, a Jacksonville man, Dent said. After a “brief encounter,” Dent said officers shot at Paige, hitting him.

Dent said medical aid was immediately rendered, and Paige was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation into the shooting and is now working to learn more about what happened.
