After a brief period of time over the summer where Democrats saw a little bit of a bump in their overall polling numbers and a slight momentum shift in their direction in the aftermath of the Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade, their hopes and dreams of a “comeback” of sorts ahead of the crucial midterm elections collided with some brutal reality checks.

For starters, President Joe Biden’s approval numbers came crashing down to earth. Independent voters reasserted themselves as well, with Biden hitting new lows among that key voting bloc, with independents also expressing disapproval with his emphasis on abortion over kitchen table issues like inflation and the economy, both of which have consistently been shown to be the biggest priorities for most voters, especially the closer we get to Election Day.

There has also been the continuing Hispanic exodus from the Democratic party, with growing numbers disapproving of the “woke” direction the party has taken in recent years. Neither looks to be changing anytime soon.

But in a new development sure to send Democrat strategists into a full-blown political panic with just one week to go before voters head to the polls, fresh polling from the Wall Street Journal shows a massive swing among suburban white women from Democrats to Republicans in a roughly two-month time frame:

The GOP has seen a shift in its favor among several voter groups, including Latino voters and women, and particularly white suburban women. That group, which the pollsters said makes up 20% of the electorate, shifted 26 percentage points away from Democrats since the Journal’s August poll and now favors the GOP by 15 percentage points.

Relatedly, the poll also indicated that generic balloting now favors the GOP over Democrats, also a flip from their August numbers:

This reminds me of the huge shift we saw among education-minded voters in Virginia with just a week or so to go in the gubernatorial race between Glenn Youngkin and Terry McAuliffe in 2021, which was confirmation of an overall swing in support from McAuliffe to Youngkin among white female voters and independent voters after McAuliffe infamously declared in a September 2021 debate that he didn’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist nor a polling expert to be able to figure out that Democrats can’t do well come election time when white suburban women, Hispanics, and independent voters – all of who Democrats heavily rely on to come through for them down the homestretch – are all running away from them.

That red wave isn’t just looking like a mere wave anymore. It’s looking like a full-blown political tsunami of epic proportions. And when all the dust and smoke clears, if everything plays out according to what polls over the last couple of months have been saying, the only ones Democrats will have to blame for the catastrophe are themselves.
