Latest closures, cancellations around Jacksonville area due to Nicole

Some local counties are anticipating damage and flooding from Nicole, which was upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane on Wednesday.

Here’s the latest information on closures for local counties.

The St. Johns River Water Management District is closing all District-managed navigational locks, campgrounds and properties, to include trails and day-use areas, throughout its 18-county region beginning Wednesday. Duval County

Among the closures and major schedule changes in preparation for Nicole, the Jacksonville Veterans Day Parade and breakfast on Friday will not take place, Mayor Lenny Curry announced Tuesday.

Curry said he knows everyone looks forward to the Veterans Day Parade every year, but it’s being canceled, along with the breakfast on Friday, “out of an abundance of caution.”

“We cannot risk the safety of our veterans and our citizens,” Curry said.

The Jacksonville Fair updated Wednesday to say it will be closed Wednesday and Thursday and will reopen at 3 p.m. on Friday because of the storm.

The Duval County Courthouse be closed on Thursday, Nov. 10 due to the approach of Nicole. As previously scheduled, the Courthouse will remain closed on Friday, Nov. 11 in observance of the Veterans Day holiday. As a result, the Duval County Clerk of Courts announces that all its offices will be closed beginning on Thursday, Nov. 10 through the end of business on Friday, Nov. 11. This includes both the Duval County Courthouse and the Clerk’s beaches branch at 1543 Atlantic Blvd.

City Offices will be closed Thursday, Nov. 10 and Friday, Nov. 11.

Curbside garbage, recycling, bulk and yard waste collections will be canceled, Thursday Nov 10. The make-up day will be Saturday, Nov. 12.

Nova Southeastern University’s Jacksonville campus will close by the end of business Tuesday and will remain closed Wednesday and Thursday. You can get more information on NSU’s Hurricane Website at nova.edu/hurricane.

The University of North Florida is canceling all classes and events, including online classes, for Thursday, Nov. 10. University offices will be closed during this time. On Friday, Nov. 11, University offices are closed and classes will not be held due to the Veterans Day holiday, but the campus will be open for campus activities and events. University housing will remain open and residential students will receive notifications and updates relating to dining from the Department of Housing and Residence Life.

Duval County Public Schools will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 10, due to the expected impact of Nicole.

The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens announced it will be closed beginning Wednesday, Nov. 9 and anticipates reopening on Saturday, Nov. 12.

The museum will remain open through its regular business hours on Tuesday, Nov. 8, including free admission during extended hours from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. as a part of the Free Tuesdays program.

MOCA Jacksonville will be closed beginning Thursday, Nov. 10, due to the impending storm. The museum will also be closed on Friday, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day. It is anticipated that the museum will resume regular hours on Saturday, Nov. 12 for VyStar Free Saturdays at MOCA.

The Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve is closing on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. The Kingsley Plantation will close on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. You can find updates on the Timucuan Preserve at nps.gov/timu.

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority is suspending service for the St. Johns River Ferry effective at 7 a.m. Wednesday through Thursday in anticipation of any potential impacts from Nicole. JTA anticipates returning to service Friday. The Skyway will close Thursday, and reopen Friday.

JTA Bus Routes will run on a Saturday schedule on Thursday, Nov. 10. JTA will announce any detours due to flooding or high winds as needed through the MyJTA mobile app and the JTA website. Regular schedules will resume Friday, Nov. 11. JTA will suspend all Bus service if sustained winds reach 35 miles per hour until those winds subside. Connexion and Connexion Plus paratransit services, ReadiRide, and Express Select services will operate on normal schedules Thursday.

All classes and activities on all FSCJ campuses and centers are canceled Thursday, Nov. 10, including online classes. In addition, all faculty and administrative offices will also be closed Thursday. The college will remain closed on Friday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day as previously scheduled. At this time, classes will resume and all locations will reopen on Saturday, Nov. 12, at regularly scheduled times.

Atlantic Beach City Hall, other City of Atlantic Beach offices, and community centers will be closed to the public for the remainder of the week (Friday is Veterans Day).

St. Johns County

The Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine closed at about 7:20 a.m. Thursday to all except emergency traffic.

Due to the storm’s projected timeline, according to the St. Johns County School District, schools will remain open Wednesday, Nov. 9, with a regular early dismissal. Extended day services will operate as usual. There will be no afterschool activities, events, or athletics. All schools and district offices will be closed Thursday, Nov. 10. The district reminded students’ families that Friday, Nov. 11, is a holiday honoring Veterans Day.

Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind will be closed Thursday, Nov. 10, and Friday, Nov. 11.

Due to deteriorating weather conditions, solid waste yard debris collections will be suspended Thursday, Nov. 10 in St. Augustine. Residents are urged to secure debris and bins to the best of their ability as Nicole approaches, and to be prepared for storm conditions. As a reminder, residential recycling will not be collected this week, but will resume on Thursday, Nov. 17 and Friday, Nov. 18.

Due to potential impacts of Nicole, St. Johns County has suspended household garbage, recycling, and yard debris collection schedules on Thursday, Nov. 10, with normal service resuming Friday, Nov. 11. Residents originally scheduled for Thursday collection will have service on Saturday, Nov. 12. St. Johns County encourages residents to secure all garbage and recycling containers for the duration of the storm. The Tillman Ridge and Stratton Road Transfer Stations will also be closed on Nov. 10.

All St. Johns County libraries, bookmobiles, and book drops will close Wednesday, Nov. 9, at noon and Thursday, Nov. 10. Libraries are closed Friday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day. Operational decisions beyond Friday will be determined based on weather conditions. Due dates will be extended and fines will not be incurred during the closure.

All St. Johns County Parks & Recreation parks and facilities will close Wednesday, Nov. 9, at noon and Thursday, Nov. 10, until the duration of the weather event. This includes but is not limited to athletic playing fields, passive parks, boat ramps, playgrounds, fishing piers, and the St. Johns County Golf Course. Beachfront parks and walkovers will also be closed during this time. Parks and facilities will reopen when safety inspections have been completed and weather conditions allow. Beach driving on all St. Johns County beaches is currently restricted.

With the exception of emergency service employees responding to Nicole, all offices and departments of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners will close Wednesday, Nov. 9, starting at noon and Thursday, Nov. 10. Government offices are closed Friday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day. The same closures also apply to the government offices of the City of St. Augustine.

The St. Augustine Municipal Marina is currently closed and will reopen once weather conditions allow.

City of St. Augustine Beach government offices will remain open Wednesday and close Thursday, Nov. 10, and Friday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day.

The St. Johns County Clerk of Court and Comptroller offices will close at noon Wednesday, Nov. 9, and remain closed on Thursday, Nov. 10, due to predicted impacts from Nicole. As previously scheduled, we will be closed Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Court operations in St. Johns County are suspended Thursday and Friday, Nov. 10-11. FEMA will temporarily close the Disaster Recovery Center in St. Johns County, located at the Wind Mitigation Building, 3111 Agricultural Center Drive, from Wednesday, Nov. 9-Friday, Nov. 11. The DRC will be inspected on Saturday, Nov. 12, and reopen once it is determined safe.

Beach driving is also restricted at Porpoise Point beginning Monday. The remaining vehicular access ramps will be restricted beginning Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m. These restrictions will be imposed for the duration of the storm.

Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas National Monuments will be CLOSED starting Wednesday, Nov. 9, in anticipation of severe weather and potential impacts from Nicole. While the storm track is unpredictable, based on existing information, park officials have decided to err on the side of caution and focus on visitor, volunteer, and staff safety by this preemptive closure. Both Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas will remain closed until further notice. For updates, please check park websites at www.nps.gov/casa and www.nps.gov/foma.

The Joe Satriani concert scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 9 at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall is postponed. Ticket holders should hold onto their tickets as they work to confirm a new date. Original tickets will be honored on the new date. No new ticket purchase is needed. For those unable to attend the new date, refunds will be available at point of purchase. The Fortunate Youth concert scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 10 at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall is rescheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 15. All tickets will be honored for the new date; no new ticket purchase is needed. For those that cannot attend the rescheduled date, refunds will be available at point of purchase.

Due to Nicole, the am Sandler show scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 10 at The St. Augustine Amphitheater is rescheduled for Friday, Nov. 11. All tickets will be honored for the new date; no new ticket purchase is needed. For those that cannot attend the new date, refunds are available at point of purchase.

The St. Augustine Amphitheater and Ponte Vedra Concert Hall Box Offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 10. The St. Augustine Amphitheatre Box Office will open on Friday, Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and can process refunds for tickets purchased at both The St. Augustine Amphitheatre and Ponte Vedra Concert Hall Box Offices.

Council on Aging (COA) has announced that all COA senior centers and facilities, including River House, Sunshine Center, COA headquarters, and scheduled IMEP programs, will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 9 and 10, due to expected tropical storm conditions, and on Friday, Nov. 11, 2022, in observance of Veterans Day. Due to the expected impact on our community from Nicole, all Sunshine Bus public transportation services and Paratransit services will be suspended beginning the morning of Thursday, November 10, 2022. St. Johns River State College will cancel all classes and close all campuses (Clay, Putnam and St. Johns counties) at noon Wednesday. The College will remain closed through Friday, Nov. 11.

The Thrasher-Horne Center will close today at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Events scheduled at the TH Center for the weekend will continue.

SJR State libraries will be open on Sunday, Nov. 13.

The city of St. Augustine has canceled the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Project S.W.I.N.G. on Friday, Nov. 11 due to the forecasted impacts of Nicole. Currently, an alternative date has not been scheduled.

Flagler County

FEMA is also closing the temporary Disaster Recovery Center at the Flagler County Fairgrounds from Wednesday, Nov. 9-Friday, Nov. 11, in preparation for the storm.

Flagler County Parks and Recreation is closing all its dune walkovers and beach access points – effective immediately – for safety reasons for the duration of Nicole.

“We kindly ask for everyone to please stay clear of these access areas until they reopen them after the storm,” said County ministrator Heidi Petito. “We want everyone to be safe, and there are definitely going to be stronger winds and higher surf than what we are used to experiencing.”

Officials have urged residents and businesses to prepare for tropical-storm-like impacts, including topping off emergency kits and having a destination in mind to go if evacuations are called for.

Those on the barrier island – from the Volusia County line to the St. John’s County line – should be prepared to evacuate as early as Wednesday morning.

“At this time, it is expected that Flagler County will see conditions similar to what we saw with Hurricane Ian, to include coastal flooding and power outages but with less rainfall and therefore less inland flooding,” said Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord. “If we call for evacuations, we will open a shelter.”

Flagler Schools Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt announced Tuesday that schools in the district will have an early release Wednesday, Nov. 9. Classes and all campus or district activities for Thursday, Nov. 10, are canceled. Friday, Nov. 11, remains a holiday in observance of Veterans Day.

Clay County

The Veterans Day at Camp Blanding event this Friday has been canceled due to the impending tropical activity in the area.

At this time there are no plans to reschedule the event.

Residents should evaluate their readiness for tropical activity and prepare their families and property now, in the event the county experiences high winds, heavy rain, and storm surge.

Due to Nicole, Clay County District Schools will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 10.

Friday, Nov. 11, is a planned holiday in observance of Veterans Day, and schools and district offices will be closed.

Department of Health-Clay will close for Nicole on Thursday, Nov. 10 and remain closed for Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Offices will reopen Monday.

St. Johns River State College will cancel all classes and close all campuses (Clay, Putnam and St. Johns counties) at noon Wednesday. The College will remain closed through Friday, Nov. 11.

Clay County Animal Services are closed Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. It will be open on Saturday depending on weather conditions.

Putnam County

All schools in Putnam County will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 10. All after-school activities and athletics are canceled at the end of the school day, Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Local emergency operations and district officials have also made the decision to dismiss students one hour early Wednesday, Nov. 9. Please prepare to pick your child up from school or be at the bus stop one hour early. Please know students who are in third grade or lower will not be released at the bus stop without a parent or guardian present. Those students will be returned to their school for supervision until someone can pick them up. We recognize this may be burdensome for many families, and appreciate your cooperation as we are working to staff and open shelters for our community members.

Friday, Nov. 11 is a scheduled holiday for Veterans Day.

The district expects to have all schools open for students on Monday, Nov. 14.

The following shelters will be open for the community beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday:

  • Ochwilla Elementary School

  • Kelley Smith Elementary School

  • Browning-Pearce Elementary School

  • Middleton-Burney Elementary School.

Alachua County

Due to the anticipated effects of Nicole, the Veterans Day Celebration scheduled for Friday, Nov. 11, is canceled. The annual celebration occurs at Veterans Memorial Park at 7400 S.W. 41st Place, Gainesville.

The cancellation does not affect other Veterans Day events in the community.

In Gainesville, city offices remain open Thursday, Nov. 10, but closed for Veterans Day, Nov. 11. All City parks will close Wednesday, Nov. 9, beginning at 5 p.m. and remain closed Thursday, Nov. 10. Regional Transit System bus service is suspended Thursday, Nov. 10. Holiday service resumes on Veterans Day. Residential trash pickup for Thursday, Nov. 10, has been suspended and rescheduled for Friday, Nov. 11, and neighbors are asked to not set containers or items curbside tomorrow.

All Alachua County and City of Gainesville waste collections regularly scheduled for Thursday will now be picked up on Friday due to Nicole. Regular collection schedules will resume on Monday, Nov. 14, 2022. The Leveda Brown Environmental Park and Transfer Station (5115 N.E. 63 Avenue, Gainesville) will be closed on Thursday due to Tropical Storm Nicole. It will reopen on Friday, Nov. 11, and will have extended hours on Saturday, Nov. 12, remaining open until 2 p.m.

Columbia County

The Veterans Day Parade scheduled for Friday, Nov. 11 in Lake City has been canceled due to anticipated inclement weather.

The Columbia County School District said all schools will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 10. All extracurricular activities are also canceled that day.

The district will be closed on Friday, Nov. 11, for all employees and students in observance of Veterans Day.

According to the district, the plan is to re-open for a normal school day on Monday, Nov. 14.

Georgia

In preparation for Nicole and the subsequent impacts to Camden County, Cumberland Island National Seashore will close to the public at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9. A mandatory evacuation is in place. All campers, visitors, staff, and volunteers must depart the island by 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9. The last boat departing the island is at 11 a.m. from the Sea Camp dock.

The park will remain closed through at least Friday, Nov. 11. After the storm has passed, damage assessments will occur and a re-opening date will be established when the park is deemed safe for visitation.

In Glynn County, Fort Frederica National Monument will close to the public at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9. The park will remain closed through at least Friday, Nov. 11. After the storm has passed, damage assessments will occur, and a re-opening date will be established once the park is deemed safe for visitation.

Officials from the Camden County Board of Commissioners and the Cities of Kingsland, St. Marys, and Woodbine jointly agreed to close all local government offices Thursday, Nov. 10, due to potential impacts from Nicole. Offices are closed on Friday, Nov. 11, 2022, for Veterans Day.

Camden County Schools are also closed on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022.

The city of St. Marys, will be closed to the public on Thursday, Nov. 10, for the approaching storm, will remain closed through Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11, and will re-open Monday, Nov. 14 for normal operations. Waste Management has suspended trash service for Thursday, Nov. 10, and will make up trash pick-ups Friday and Saturday.

The Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) will temporarily suspend training at its Glynco, Georgia, training delivery point (TDP) for approximately 2,000 students effective on Thursday, Nov. 10 through Sunday, Nov. 13, 2022. Training will resume on Monday, Nov. 14.

Due to the potential for severe weather associated with Tropical Storm Nicole, the Camden and Glynn County Health Departments will suspend operations Thursday, Nov. 10. At this time, all other county health departments and Coastal Health District offices plan to be open and operational Thursday. All Coastal Health District clinics and offices will be closed Friday, November 11, in observance of Veteran’s Day.

Theme Parks

  • Walt Disney World Resort theme parks will have a phased closure today, Nov. 9, beginning at 5 p.m. and will remain closed through tomorrow morning, Nov. 10. Resort Guests are encouraged to enjoy food and beverage options at the theme parks prior to returning to their Disney Resort hotel. Theme parks will likely not reopen at their regularly scheduled time tomorrow, Nov. 10.

  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom: Closing today, Nov. 9, at 5 p.m. with last dining reservations at 5 p.m.

  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Closing today, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. with last dining reservations at 6 p.m.

  • Magic Kingdom Park: Closing today, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. Last dining reservations for Be Our Guest, Liberty Tree Tavern, Diamond Horseshoe and Cinderella’s Royal Table will be at 6 p.m., and last dining for all other dining reservations will be at 6:30 p.m.

  • EPCOT: Closing today, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. Last dining reservations for Monsieur Paul, Space 220 Restaurant, Akershus Royal Banquet Hall and Garden Grill Restaurant will be at 6 p.m., and last dining for all other dining reservations will be at 6:30 p.m.

  • Universal’s Volcano Bay is currently closed and Universal Orlando Resort, including CityWalk, will close early on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. Our hotels will remain operational as they focus on taking care of our guests.
