Mindy Kaling was cautious with her words during her recent appearance on The View as she addressed the discussion surrounding her cameo on With Love, Meghan, Meghan Markle’s latest show on Netflix. The new lifestyle series hasn’t received the best reviews and has sparked interest due to a particular interaction between Markle and Kaling, who appeared together to prepare a “garden tea party” for their children.
In the episode, Markle mentioned to Kaling that she now goes by a different surname, stating, “It’s interesting that you refer to me as Meghan Markle; you know I’m Sussex now.”
During her guest appearance on today’s episode of The View, Alyssa Farah Griffin questioned Kaling about her experience on Markle’s show. Kaling responded diplomatically, indicating her desire to avoid being further involved in the ongoing controversy.
“You know, I had a great time,” she said, then seemed to allude to the social media buzz about her being corrected by Markle. “I noticed that whenever I do something, anything related to Meghan it becomes, like—” she then paused and Whoopi Goldberg filled in the gap for her, suggesting, “big news,” which Kaling repeated.
“We were making sandwiches and, you know, then they’ll push in on my face on TikTok and they’ll be like, ‘Look at this emotion you felt,’ and I honestly didn’t even remember, ’cause we shot it like nine months ago. I loved my time with Meghan,” Kaling said.
She then added with a laugh, “I’m also like, let her promote her show, I’m here to talk about Running Point!” referring to her own Netflix show, which debuted on the streamer shortly before Markle’s.
Kaling wrapped up her answer by reiterating, “It was great,” then noting, “it’s really fascinating seeing … the reaction to her.”
Goldberg put it more bluntly when she replied, “People love to hate her. People love to talk about her,” and Joy Behar agreed, telling Kaling, “She triggers people.”
Sunny Hostin was a staunch defender of Markle and her show, telling Kaling, “it’s a beautifully made show and it’s aspirational and I loved it, and I loved you in it.”
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
