(PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo.) A man has been arrested and a carjacking victim rescued after a high-speed chase on I-25 early Monday morning, May 26.

According to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), deputies responded on Monday morning to a robbery call at the Circle K in northern Colorado City, just off I-25. As they were responding, deputies learned the suspect had left the scene in a 2020 grey Ford Escape.

Around the same time, a woman called PCSO to report that her daughter had been kidnapped Sunday night in Aurora and that her cell phone was pinging near the same Circle K. The Ford Escape from the Circle K robbery also matched the description of the kidnapping victim’s car.

A deputy patrolling I-25 spotted the Ford heading northbound near the Pueblo Boulevard exit and tried to pull the car over. PCSO said the driver sped away from the deputy, heading southbound on I-25 at dangerously high speeds from Pueblo County into Huerfano County.

The driver, later identified as 28-year-old Shane McSwane, reportedly refused to stop and crossed the interstate median several times, endangering other drivers on the interstate.

Huerfano County deputies successfully used stop sticks on I-25 north of Walsenburg, deflating some of the Ford’s tires. According to PCSO, McSwane continued driving several more miles before PCSO deputies were able to PIT maneuver the car. Huerfano and Pueblo County deputies were able to box the Ford in with their patrol cars, and McSwane was taken into custody at gunpoint.

Victim was shaken but uninjured: Police

PCSO said the kidnapping victim was visibly shaken and emotionally distraught, but was uninjured.

“I want to commend our deputies as well as the Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office for their swift, professional, and courageous actions during this highly dangerous situation,” said Pueblo County Sheriff David J. Lucero. “Their decisive response saved this victim’s life. We are thankful this ended without harm to the victim and the public.”

Through their investigation, deputies learned the woman was carjacked around 11 p.m. on Sunday night, May 25, as she was stopped near I-225 and I-70 in Aurora due to a traffic crash. The victim said McSwane approached her car and forced his way in, threatening her and taking control of the car.

McSwane then allegedly drove the woman against her will for nearly four hours, going as far south as the town of Aguilar. While driving, McSwane allegedly made sexual comments to the victim, touched her, and forced her to touch him.

Suspect threatened to shoot clerk over a lighter: Police

After stopping in Aguilar for gas, the victim said McSwane drove north on I-25 to the Circle K in Colorado City, where he allegedly went inside and threatened the clerk that he would shoot them if they didn’t give him a lighter. The clerk was uninjured, PCSO said.
