House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is very fond of tossing her Catholicism around when she thinks it serves her narrative. But when it doesn’t — such as when she goes against basic Church teaching when it comes to abortion — she doesn’t seem to think that particular teaching applies to her or the policies that she pushes.

With the latest bill Democrats tried to push through the House, Pelosi was championing radical abortion access, up to the moment of birth. She also was encouraging abortion protests against the Supreme Court justices, specifically to try to change their minds — essentially endorsing ‘decision by intimidation.’

That may have been the last straw for San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone. Cordileone announced Friday that Pelosi is now banned from receiving Holy Communion because of her pro-abortion stance, until she formally and publicly renounces her position. Cordileone had previously warned Pelosi about her actions. Now, he has sent her a letter saying that she shouldn’t come up to Communion during mass because priests will not give her communion.

From Fox News:

“A Catholic legislator who supports procured abortion, after knowing the teaching of the Church, commits a manifestly grave sin which is a cause of most serious scandal to others. Therefore, universal Church law provides that such persons ‘are not to be admitted to Holy Communion,’” he says in the letter. [….]

“Therefore, in light of my responsibility as the Archbishop of San Francisco to be ‘concerned for all the Christian faithful entrusted to [my] care” (Code of Canon Law, can. 383, §1), by means of this communication I am hereby notifying you that you are not to present yourself for Holy Communion and, should you do so, you are not to be admitted to Holy Communion, until such time as you publically repudiate your advocacy for the legitimacy of abortion and confess and receive absolution of this grave sin in the sacrament of Penance.” he said.

The Catechism of the Church calls abortion “gravely contrary to moral law” and it says “formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense” which can earn you excommunication.

But not only has Pelosi pushed abortion laws, but she has tried to argue that her stance is right in terms of Catholicism. She’s telling the Catholic Church she’s right and they’re wrong.

“This [topic] really gets me burned up in case you didn’t notice, because again I’m very Catholic, devout, practicing, all of that. They would like to throw me out. But I’m not going because I don’t want to make their day,” she said this month.

Seriously? It’s one thing to say you think differently. She’s not only saying that, but she’s saying the Church is wrong, then essentially expecting them to embrace her anyway. But that’s so San Fran Nan — she thinks she’s always right about everything. I’m not a big one into preaching at others, but it does seem to me that you aren’t “very Catholic, or devout” if you don’t support a fundamental tenet of the faith, according to the Catechism.
