Stress-Induced Tragedy: Police Release Video Interview of Man Accused in Uber Driver's Fatality

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A tragic case in Albuquerque has led to an 18-year-old man facing the death penalty after being charged with the murder of an Uber driver. The young man, identified as Sheliky Sanchez Jr., reportedly confessed to using the act of violence as a way to relieve stress, a revelation made during his police interview following his arrest.

In a chilling admission, Sanchez Jr. recounted to police how he shot the unsuspecting driver, Joseph Andrus, describing the act as disturbingly straightforward. “It just seemed so easy,” he remarked, noting that Andrus was unaware of the impending danger as he simply faced forward in the driver’s seat.

The incident unfolded in August when police were called to a shooting in southwest Albuquerque. Upon arrival, they discovered Andrus, an Uber driver, had been shot and killed. Investigators revealed that Sanchez Jr. orchestrated the encounter by having his girlfriend order an Uber, deliberately selecting Andrus after reviewing other potential drivers. After Andrus picked him up, he drove Sanchez Jr. to a location near Central and Coors, where the fatal shooting occurred, followed by the theft of Andrus’s car. Sanchez Jr. was apprehended the next day.

During the interrogation, Sanchez Jr. painted a picture of a troubled young man overwhelmed by life’s pressures. “I wasn’t myself, I guess. I don’t know,” he confessed, struggling to articulate his motives. He spoke of seeing the car and how simple the act seemed, yet he was unable to fully comprehend what he hoped to achieve through such a violent means.

He also claimed that he had shot and killed people in the past, but has not faced charges for those incidents.

Sanchez Jr. was facing a state murder charge, but they have since been dropped as he now faces federal charges for carjacking resulting in death, using a firearm resulting in death, and kidnapping resulting in death. A trial date for his federal case has not yet been scheduled. If convicted, he could face a mandatory life sentence in prison or even the death penalty.
