Heroes, zeros and the inside pitch from the Yankees’ 6-4 win over the Mets on Sunday afternoon in the Subway Series in Queens:

Hero

Cody Bellinger has been showcasing his defensive skills for the Yankees all season, especially in a recent game where he made an impressive catch and a strong throw to secure a crucial double play. This helped the Yankees protect their two-run lead with Mark Leiter Jr. on the mound.

Zero

The Mets’ bullpen saw a tough outing from newcomer Zach Pop, who struggled in his first appearance with the team, giving up three runs and five hits in just over an inning. This performance prevented the Mets from completing a sweep in the Subway Series which relied heavily on bullpen pitching.

Unsung hero

Tim Hill came into the game in a critical moment in the bottom of the seventh inning, inheriting a runner on base with two outs. He delivered 1 ⅓ scoreless innings to bridge the gap to the ninth inning with the Yankees still holding onto their two-run lead, setting the stage for Devin Williams to secure the save.

Key stat

3-3: The two teams split the Subway Series during the regular season.

All the more reason for a rematch in October.

Quote of the day

“Considering the context of this week and everything, that’s probably our play of the year so far.”
