TULSA, Okla. (KFOR) A 13-year-old Tulsa boy died on Labor Day following a fireworks incident at an apartment complex.

According to the Tulsa Police Department, officers responded to the Sandy Park Apartments at around 5:30 p.m. on Monday on reports of a fireworks explosion and a child in cardiac arrest. When officers arrived at the scene, Tulsa Fire Department firefighters were performing lifesaving measures on the 13-year-old boy.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he died, officials said.

Witnesses recalled that a group of young males had been setting fireworks off earlier that evening, and said the sound of fireworks kept getting louder, before seeing a small grass fire near the southern side of the complex, with a small child lying on the ground.

Those witnesses were able to pull the child away from the fire before calling 911.

Police said that someone with the 13-year-old boy explained they were setting off mortar-style fireworks, and the teenage victim had been holding the fireworks tube, with the mortar facing his head, when it ignited.
