A hit-and-run incident on Jacksonville’s Northside has left a 24-year-old man dead, prompting an investigation by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
The crash took place early Tuesday morning, around 5:54 a.m., at the crossroads of Gold Star Family Parkway and Pecan Park Road, according to Sergeant Robert Hungerford of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Sgt. Hungerford explained that the collision involved two vehicles: a Chevrolet S10 traveling east on Gold Star Family Parkway and a Chevrolet Silverado heading west on the same road.
The accident occurred when the driver of the Silverado made a left turn onto Pecan Park Road, cutting in front of the Chevrolet S10 and resulting in the fatal crash.
In a tragic twist, the suspect allegedly paused to check on the victim momentarily before fleeing the scene, as reported by Sgt. Hungerford.
According to Hungerford, the man was then taken to a local hospital where he died shortly after arriving.
After the collision, Hungerford said the driver of the Silverado got out of the vehicle and tended to the 24-year-old man “for a moment,” but then ran away from the scene. JSO’s K-9 and drone unit responded to the scene and searched the area “extensively,” but was unable to find the suspect, Hungerford said.
Hungerford said the suspect is described as a Hispanic male, who’s approximately 5-foot-6 tall with a medium build and short black hair. Hungerford also described the suspect as being in his late-20s/early-30s.
“We do have some leads and we expect to follow up on those today,” Hungerford said Tuesday. “We have a team of six detectives that have this as their primary duty for the foreseeable future.”
Hungerford said the intersection of Gold Star Family Parkway and Pecan Park Road was closed for several hours following the crash.
Anyone with information on the crash or suspect is asked to call JSO’s non-emergency number at 904-630-0500. To provide information anonymously, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
