LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Attorneys for the woman who was hit by a microphone thrown by Cardi B in a Las Vegas nightclub in July 2023 filed a lawsuit against the performer and the owner of the venue.

The lawsuit, which was filed on July 21, 2025, names both Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar Cephus, and Drai’s Management Group LLC, which owns and runs the club where the concert took place.

Video of the incident went viral on TikTok. That clip showed the hip-hop performer asking to be sprayed with water moments before she threw her microphone into the audience, hitting a then-26-year-old woman.

The victim, whose lawyers said her name was withheld from the lawsuit due to mental health issues caused by the incident, as well as potential backlash, traveled from Cleveland, Ohio, in July 2023 to attend Cardi B’s concert at the Drai Beachclub and Nightclub.

“What has been written off as a joke by many people is actually a traumatic experience that has significantly impacted my well-being and quality of life,” the victim said in a written statement.  “I am seeking justice in the hopes of holding Cardi B accountable for her misdeeds, as no celebrity is above the law.”

According to the lawsuit, this was the victim’s first solo trip, which she took specifically to attend the event.

“She came to Las Vegas to see someone that she loves. She came to the city to see an entertainer that she still cares about,” Attorney Cierra N. Norris of the C. Norris Law Group, who is representing the victim, told media during a conference on Thursday.

The lawsuit states that during the performance, Cardi B was onstage in “visibly high-temperature conditions” and asked the audience to splash water on her, making “repeated gestures and statements” for concertgoers to throw water.

Another person onstage, an unidentified emcee, reinforced Cardi B’s request for water to be thrown, according to the lawsuit.

After several drinks were thrown, Cardi B “audibly responded with apparent approval,” saying “Wooh, that [expletive] feel good,” the lawsuit stated.

Multiple attendees then threw more drinks toward the stage, including the victim, who “splashed a small portion of her drink” toward the hip-hop artist.

The lawsuit then alleges that “in apparent anger and without warning,” Cardi B “suddenly and forcefully” threw her microphone directly at the victim.

The victim, who initially filed a police report against Cardi B, told officers that the microphone injured her shoulder.

Cardi B attends The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute benefit gala celebrating the opening of the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibition on Monday, May 6, 2024, in New York.

“After a thorough review of this case and with the consultation from the Clark County District Attorney’s Office, this case has been closed as having insufficient evidence,” a spokesperson said in a statement in August 2023. “No charges will be filed in relation to this case.”

The victim suffered “physical pain, emotional distress, reputational damage, embarrassment, and harassment from both media and members of the public” following the incident, according to the lawsuit.

“She was hit in the shoulder and hit in the arm,” Norris said. “She then was thrown out of that nightclub and was turned into a viral sensation.”

The microphone thrown by Cardi B was later auctioned for approximately $99,000 by Scott Fisher, the owner of the company that provided the microphone for the performance.

“This sale further publicized the incident and exacerbated Plaintiff’s emotional distress,” the lawsuit states.

The lawsuit alleges that Cardi B “knew or should have known” that both the water throwing she asked for “posed no threat of injury or harm” and that the microphone, which the lawsuit calls a “dense and blunt object,” posed a risk of physical injury when thrown.

The lawsuit also claims Drai had a “duty to supervise the performance” and make sure attendees, including the victim, were safe.

Cardi B was also involved in a “substantially similar altercation” the night before at the same venue, the lawsuit claims, where she threw a microphone at a DJ. The lawsuit said Drai was aware of that incident.

The lawsuit seeks general damages in an amount “to be proven at trial, but not less than $15,000,” special damages, including medical expenses, emotional distress, reputational harm, and economic loss, as well as punitive and exemplary damages, and attorneys’ fees.

Cardi B and representatives for Drai’s have not publicly responded to the lawsuit.
