He graduated from Dartmouth College with a B.A. in English Literature, English Honors, with “High Distinction.” Birney got an M.A. in Theatre Arts from UCLA, where he studied acting and directing with Ralph Freud and William Melnitz.

Throughout their marriage, he allegedly mistreated her mentally and physically, she claimed in 2011. Birney responded to his ex-charges in a lengthy post on his website.
According to the December 2017 edition of the Wide Wide World newsletter for Dartmouth College class of 1961 graduates, Birney was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
He died at the age of 83 on April 29, 2022, at his home in Santa Monica, California.
