Birney went to school in Brooklyn, Ohio, and graduated from Cleveland’s West High School. He lettered in basketball, football, and track and field and was inducted into the National Honor Society.

 

 

He graduated from Dartmouth College with a B.A. in English Literature, English Honors, with “High Distinction.” Birney got an M.A. in Theatre Arts from UCLA, where he studied acting and directing with Ralph Freud and William Melnitz.

He died at the age of 83 on April 29, 2022, at his home in Santa Monica, California.
