Meet Ikem Ekwonu’s Parents –  Tagbo ‘T.J.’ Ekwonu and Amaka Ekwonu

The NC State player Ikem Ekwonu belongs to a family of sportsmen. That’s why his parents are very supportive of their boy and his career. They must have been filled with pride in their son and his achievements.

Ikem was born to Nigerian parents Tagbo ‘T.J.’ Ekwonu and Amaka Ekwonu. His father was a basketball player. he used to play for Nigeria. He used to play college basketball before coming to the USA. The 6’6″ tall player had an athletic body during his prime days. Currently, he is a physician.

Similarly, the NC State player’s mother Amaka was a high school track star. She currently supervises her family-owned firm. Ikem is the youngest among four children born to his parents.

Ikemfuna Ekwonu was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on October 31, 2000. He is currently 21 years old. He studied at Providence Day School in Charlotte. He chose NC State amid offers from Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Maryland, and Virginia.

His name Ikemfuna is translated as “my effort will not be in vain”. He was nicknamed Ickey by his former coach due to his likeliness to former Cincinnati Bengals RB Ickey Woods.

The Athletic called him the most feared lineman in the AAC in 2021. He also received the team’s Jim Ritcher Award for the top offensive lineman. Additionally, he was named to the FWAA Freshman All-American team and the PFF All-Freshman Team of 2019.
