This is the moment a ‘rude’ pelican appeared to swear at a photographer as he took snaps in Greece.

British photographer Austin Thomas, 55, captured images of the angry-looking bird giving the V-sign as it thrust out its wings at Lake Kerkini in the region of Macedonia, northern Greece.

Thomas, of Rainford, near St Helens, Merseyside said of his surprising encounter with the Dalmation pelican: ‘The lake was frozen and covered in snow so when it was landing its feet slipped and just as humans would throw their arms out to try and regain some balance, it did the same with its wings.

‘Because of this in this photo it looks like the feathers at the end of its wings were giving a fingered salute of some description my way. It was a split second reaction by the pelican, and myself, but once it had gained balance it appeared “normal” again.’
