Saturnino said that his secret was a ‘quiet life… and not hurting anyone’

The Spaniard was affectionately nicknamed ‘El pepino’, a shortened version of Peña, the name of Saturnino’s mother.

Saturnino once told Guinness World Records that his secret to a long life was “a quiet life…and not hurting anyone.”

His height meant that he avoided being enlisted to fight in the brutal and bloody Spanish civil war.

Instead, he went on to run a successful shoe-making business, initially supplying the army with boots, and spent his life in trade.

Family

He married his wife Antonina Barrio Gutierrez in 1933 and is survived by seven children, 14 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.

Saturnino was passionate about soccer who helped found the local Puente Castro team and also supported the Cultural y Deportivo Leonesa team.

In a tribute, the team tweeted that he will be remembered with “great affection” and sent their condolences to his family for their “pain and loss”.

His former teammates paid homage to Saturnino and celebrated him as the oldest member of the club to honour his 110th birthday.

Daughter Angeles and son-in-law Bernardo were by his side he died.

Kane Tanaka is officially the world’s oldest woman at 119 and the oldest person who ever lived was Jeanne Calment, who died aged 122 years.

But there have been other claims including Francisca Susano, affectionately known as Lola Iska, who died in November aged purportedly aged 124 in the Philippines.

Lola’s record-breaking age was confirmed by local officials but she died before the claim was independently verified.

As recently as September, Guinness World Records was still examining documents needed for her to be officially declared as world’s oldest person.

In June last year, a gran claiming the world’s oldest person celebrated turning 119.

Seker Arslan was reported

Seker Arslan was reported to be even older yesterday in Turkish media after her cake had a large number 120 on top, as even her family seemed unsure of her age.

Also last year, a Chinese woman claimed that she was celebrating her 134th birthday.

The claims have come under some scrutiny and doubts were raised due to her unverifiable birth records.

And a Russian woman who claimed to be the oldest in the world at 123 years old passed away in 2019.
