Melissa Lucio is the state’s first woman to be executed. She was arrested and later convicted of capital murder. In 2007, the story made national headlines.
The youngest child named Mariah Alvarez, a toddler was found unresponsive in 2007. According to the innocence project, Melissa, the mother of 14 children, was a loving and caring mother despite facing physical assault and abuse from her partner and ex-husband.
On February 15, 2007, Mariah fell a flight of stairs while the family was busy settling things to transfer to a new house.
The toddler, Mariah, had a mild physical disability. Luckily, she didn’t get injured after the fall, but two days later, Ms. Lucio put her daughter down for a nap, and the child did not wake up. She was rushed to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

Melissa Lucio pleaded guilty and was sentenced to death imprisonment back years back. She is scheduled for execution on April 27, 2022.

Melissa was arrested in February 2007 for allegedly abusing her 2-year-old daughter Mariah. Mariah had bruises on her body, bite marks on her back, patches of hair pulled out, and a broken arm, according to autopsy reports. Shortly after, doctors at a nearby hospital pronounced her dead. During the treatments, the emergency room doctor stated that in his 30 years of practice, he had never seen a worse case of child abuse than Mariah’s.

Melissa’s children and family, on the other hand, are most likely going through a difficult time in their lives. Did you know that? Melissa was pregnant at the time of her trials. In prison, she gave birth to twins, two sons. Because of her wrongful incarceration, she gave them up for adoption.

Throughout the interrogation, Melissa Lucio maintained her innocence. Melissa sobbed as she saw photos of her younger daughter and said, “It should be me.”
Her daughter’s death has left her heartbroken. She was not even present when her 2-year-old daughter fell down the stairs because the family was busy moving to a new house.
