Teenager,16, Stabbed Schoolboy,15, In The Heart

A 15-year-old kid was killed by a teenager who was found guilty of stabbing him to death as he was returning from school.

Tamim Ian Habimana was attacked in Vincent Road, Woolwich, southeast London, on July 5, 2017, and died from a single knife wound to the heart.

A group of teenagers, including the 16-year-old murderer, were “bent on retaliation” after another 15-year-old had stabbed a person in Dartford nine days previously.

An Old Bailey jury exonerated him of murder but found him guilty of manslaughter and injuring the other youngster.

While two further lads, 15 and 16, were found not guilty of murder, they were found guilty of conspiring to commit violent disturbance and having a dangerous weapon.

The boys “went to Woolwich on July 5, 2021, to carry out a vengeance assault for a stabbing that the second victim had committed nine days earlier,” prosecutor Danny Robinson, KC, had told the court.

Tamim Ian Habimana was stabbed in the heart by a group of defendants who were equipped with weapons.

The five youths were seen crossing Vincent Road adjacent to Woolwich Arsenal station on video that was played in court.

The group then raced in the direction of Ian and his companions as one of the teenagers pulled out the metal stem from the umbrella he was carrying.

Ian tried to flee by running between two parked cars, but he was quickly apprehended by his assailants.

As his assailant turned and stabbed him once in the chest, the video showed him extending out his hands.

Despite his injury, Ian managed to run a short distance up Woolwich New Road, but collapsed shortly after.

The gang surrounded him in the street and started punching him with their fists and the umbrella stem.

Before his knife broke, Ian’s killer stabbed him once in the back.

The prosecutor claimed that an off-duty police officer named Mhmuda Gumanach noticed what was happening and raced across the road to break up the brawl.

By chance, there was another police officer present when the attack took place.

‘The attack happened really rapidly, but it happened directly in front of him.

He observed the usage of the knife and the stem of the umbrella as weapons.

The defendants went to Woolwich on that day with the intention of carrying out a violent attack.

‘The killer did not only stab the second victim once, but multiple times, continuing even when the knife had broken.’

After the attack, police cordoned off a row of stores on Woolwich New Road.

One of the suspects was discovered using a school computer the day after the murder to look for accounts of Ian’s slaying.

He stated he was interested in the incident during a meeting with the school because he “used to live in Woolwich” and had been at the movie theater with pals when it happened.

An ambulance was contacted by a member of the public, and trauma specialists were airlifted to the scene.

Despite their best attempts, they were unable to save Ian, and he died just after 6 o’clock that day.

A post-mortem examination revealed that the knife had pierced his heart, leaving a 17mm wound on the surface of the skin that went 15cm deep.

Police attended the hospital where the second victim was being treated for his injuries, but the young boy refused to cooperate with the investigation.

Two other men, Daryl Bethel, 18, and Lewis Bollen, 20, were cleared by the jury of murder, attempted murder, wounding with intent and wounding.

Judge Mark Dennis, KC, will set a sentencing date later today.
