Thomas Tuchel would be interested in becoming England manager if Gareth Southgate leaves after the World Cup, but his likely wage demands would present a stumbling block.

There is doubt over whether Southgate will remain in his role after Qatar 2022 — despite the England boss insisting he is planning to stay on for next year’s Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

The FA want Southgate to remain as England boss regardless of how the team performs in Qatar.

However, there are concerns at the FA that their head coach could choose to leave after the World Cup even if England are successful.

Tuchel was sacked as Chelsea manager in September, just 16 months after leading the Blues to Champions League glory, and would be interested in replacing Southgate in the England set-up if there is a vacancy after the tournament.

However, there are potentially two significant obstacles that may stop Tuchel’s appointment.

Firstly, the German’s status as one of the best coaches in world football means he would command a huge salary.

He earned an annual salary in the region of £13million at Stamford Bridge, a sum that the FA would be reluctant to match.

Southgate earns up to £6m a year with the FA, though the fact Tuchel is out of work means the governing body would not be required to pay compensation to a club.

In addition, the FA would rather appoint an Englishman as their next manager.

However, there is a lack of strong, available English candidates to succeed Southgate.

Graham Potter was appointed to replace Tuchel as Chelsea manager, while Eddie Howe is only a year into a long-term project at Newcastle.
