The Carolina Panthers are heading for a matchup with the Los Angles Rams today in SoFi Stadium, but Baker Mayfield will not be starting. Despite playing fairly poorly en route to a 1-4 start, the quarterback is not being benched for P.J. Walker.
He injured his ankle in last week’s demoralizing loss to the San Francisco 49ers that resulted in the firing of head coach Matt Rhule and defensive coordinator Phil Snow.
The quarterback was initially believed to be going on the injured reserve, but he was healthy enough to avoid that fate. Instead, he’s considered day-to-day with the ankle injury.
The man he replaced this season, Sam Darnold, is on injured reserve right now with an ankle injury sustained in the preseason.
Will Baker Mayfield lose his job this year?
Even though his absence from the starting lineup today is a result of an injury, there were rumors that he might eventually be benched for Darnold when he returned.
The firing of Rhule seems to indicate that the Panthers might believe Mayfield was being held back, but offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo avoided the axe.

If he continues to play poorly, it’s very possible the Panthers, who have made many quarterback changes in the last three seasons, try something else.
If that happens, that probably means Mayfield will not be re-signed this offseason. He was brought in to provide stability at a position that Carolina had been missing since they cut Cam Newton a few years ago.
The former Cleveland Browns quarterback was looking for a fresh start after being ousted for Deshaun Watson. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that he’s found a permanent home or played his way into a big contract.
For now, though, his absence from the Panthers is purely injury related and not a one-to-one touchdown to interception ratio.
