Donald Trump on Monday night shared a glowing review of rapper Kanye West’s recent interview on Tucker Carlson Tonight, despite his negative comments about the former president’s son-in-law. West, who changed his name to Ye, is embroiled in an ever-deepening public scandal of his own making after being kicked off Instagram and Twitter for making anti-Semitic comments.

It was revealed last week that some of his more offensive statements toward Jews on Carlson’s Fox News show were left on the cutting room floor before being subsequently leaked. But what did make it into the interview were Ye’s criticism of Jared Kushner, who is married to Trump’s daughter Ivanka. Pictured: Kanye West interview with Fox’s Tucker Carlson. 

Salem News host Larry O’Connor asked Trump during his phone interview what he thought of the rapper’s ‘offensive’ comments against Kushner and ‘America Jews writ large.’ ‘Is this the guy you knew?’ O’Connor questioned, invoking Trump’s well-publicized friendship with Ye when the former was still in the White House. ‘Well, I haven’t really seen the statements he’s made. I did watch the interview and he was really nice to me. Beyond anybody, he was – he was great to me,’ Trump said. ‘He was great, really, to MAGA, to the MAGA movement, which was very impressive. I was, you know, not surprised.’ 

The rapper – who is an outspoken fan of Trump’s and even met with him in the Oval Office (pictured) – dismissed Kushner’s work in the Trump administration to normalize Israel’s relations with other Middle Eastern countries and claimed he was only doing it ‘to make money.’ It’s a variation of a harmful, well-known anti-Semitic trope depicting Jews as harboring excessive greed. Trump did not weigh in directly on Kushner but he did attempt to downplay the outrage at West’s remark.

‘Sometimes he’ll make a statement and a lot of people will think it’s worse than he means it to be,’ the former president said. ‘But I think that, you know, I was – I was certainly very -you know what I’m talking about. He was really high on a guy named Donald Trump.’ Trump himself came under fire Sunday for telling American Jews to ‘appreciate’ what he did for Israel during his administration ‘before it’s too late.’ The comment was widely seen by Trump’s critics as a veiled threat against Jewish Americans. 

But his public praise of Ye is much different picture than one painted by Rolling Stone, which suggests the ex-president is trying to keep a distance between himself and the rapper, who has openly spoken out about suffering from bipolar disorder. Amid the rapper’s public meltdown Trump reported called him ‘crazy’ and told others he needs ‘help,’ unnamed sources told the outlet. However, he was reportedly unfazed about Ye’s attack on his Jewish son-in-law. 

Ohio pastor Darrell Scott told Rolling Stone that he called Trump ‘two minutes’ after the Fox News interview to ask what he thought. The former president reportedly called the sit-down ‘interesting.’ When Scott asked about Ye throwing Kushner ‘under the bus,’ he said Trump replied: ‘Well, these things happen sometimes.’ Scott recalled at another point, ‘But then [Trump] said, “I will say this — he loves Trump!” and he and I both laughed. I jokingly told him we’ll see what your poll numbers look like in the morning and we had [another] good laugh over it,’ Scott told the outlet.

Outrage at Ye kicked off when he wore a ‘White Lives Matter’ shirt to his Paris Fashion Week show several weeks ago, alongside black conservative activist Candace Owens (pictured). Among the posts that got him kicked off Twitter was one promising to go ‘death con 3’ on ‘JEWISH PEOPLE.’

An appearance over the weekend on the Drink Champs podcast stirred yet more controversy, when he blamed a raunchy media story about his ex-wife Kim Kardashian and her former boyfriend Pete Davidson on ‘Jewish Zionists.’ ‘Kim is a Christian. On TMZ I just saw yesterday it said, “Pete Davidson and Kim had sex by the fireplace to honor they grandmother.” It’s Jewish Zionists that’s about that life, that’s telling this Christian woman that has four Black children to put that out as a message in the media,’ he said.
