Trinity School have a simple reason why they are doing so well in this season’s SOCS Daily Mail Schools Trophy.

The Croydon-team continue to push leaders Clifton College following their sixth win of the autumn, 54-5 over Hurstpierpoint College.

And head of rugby Paul Roberts explains: ‘Our players just love rugby. They train very hard and are always looking at the big games and how to improve.

‘They always listen very well and are looking to develop their game,’ he added.

Trinity are an emerging force in schools rugby having won the national under-18s title last season.

The success has continued this autumn as the team have put together a string of wins including Brighton College, 31-7, and Hampton, 15-0 plus runners-up in the prestigious St Joseph’s tournament.

After a break this weekend, Trinity finish the term by playing against Eton (Dec 3) and Croydon neighbours John Fisher (Dec 10).

They will need two more wins to have a chance of leaping above Clifton who have one match remaining, away to Bromsgrove (Dec 3).

The former champions Sedbergh and Wellington served up another memorable match on neutral territory in the annual showdown staged at the Broadstreet club in Coventry.

Sedbergh proved the stronger thanks to a strong second half for a 21-13 win. Tries came from Ollie Glover, Luke Parry and Kane James.

Another entertaining annual clash saw RGS Newcastle overcome north-east rivals Durham, 15-8.

It was the first time in three years, because of Covid, that this match was staged at Kingston Park, home of the Newcastle Falcons.

The Newcastle team won thanks to a first-half try from No 8 Callum Roberts followed by a try after the interval from Tom Cressey.

‘Our lads had to defend for the majority of the first half and had some great defensive sets to keep Durham out,’ said head coach Adam Hay.

‘Hats off to Durham for their physicality they brought throughout the game,’ he added.

The Trophy is played over the autumn term on a merit table-based format organised by SOCS, the school management system company. This year a record 135 teams have entered.
