Actor Julian Sands Is Missing- What Happened To Him?

One of the two missing hikers in California’s San Gabriel Mountains has been identified as 65-year-old British actor and “A Room with a View” star Julian Sands.

Sands’ family reported the 65-year-old missing on Friday night. Sands was last seen in the Mount Baldy region.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department told ABC 7 that “extreme weather on the mountain has been tough” and that there aren’t many aviation resources available.

Sands is well-known for his parts in a number of motion pictures, such as the 1985 film “A Room with a View,” “Warlock,” and “Leaving Las Vegas.”

Unknown factors include Sands’ purpose for being there and if he was trekking alone or with someone else.

Father-of-three Julian Sands had two previous marriages.

His first marriage, which lasted from 1984 to 1987, was to writer Sarah Sands, who later edited the Sunday Telegraph, the London Evening Standard, and the important Today program on BBC Radio 4. Henry, the couple’s son, was born.

In addition, the actor has two daughters from his 1990 marriage to writer Evgenia Citkowitz.

A separate search is being conducted in the mountain range’s Crystal Lake region for another hiker, Hawthorne resident Bob Gregory.

Gregory’s relatives told the publication that they are “distraught” and “fear” that he “may have damaged himself and fallen” after going missing on Monday.

His loved one’s added that police are in the process of tracing his cell phone, while search teams have combed the area on the ground and from the air on Tuesday.

Air crew efforts were limited on Wednesday due to icy conditions on the tough terrain of the range which is located in northern Los Angeles County and western San Bernardino County.

In a post to Instagram, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said that winter weather on Mt Baldy can make for ‘dangerous conditions’ and have urged hikers to think twice before traversing the area.

Over the last four weeks, search and rescue teams from the department have responded to 14 rescue missions on Mt Baldy and in the surrounding area.

The Sheriff’s department said that most rescue missions have been for ‘lost, stranded and/or injured hikers.’

‘Unfortunately, during these past four weeks, two hikers did not survive after falling and injuring themselves,’ they said.

‘Please know the current conditions on Mt Baldy are adverse and extremely dangerous.

‘Due to the high winds, the snow has turned to ice making hiking extremely dangerous.’

The treacherous conditions mean search and rescue efforts have been ‘hampered by poor weather’ and the likelihood of ‘dangerous avalanche conditions.’

‘The recent storms that brought the snow and ice conditions are not favorable for hikers, even those that feel they have a high level of experience,’ authorities said.

The Sheriff’s Department has begged visitors to heed easy safety advice.

Following all posted warning signs, checking the current and forecasted weather conditions for the area, ensuring you have the right equipment, training, and clothing for alpine conditions, taking a hiking partner, bringing a tracking or GPS device like a SPOT Device or INREACH Device, and making sure all cell phones are fully charged and to bring a charged extra power pack for it are some of these.

Visitors have also been advised not to go if they have any reservations about the terrain and to let someone know where they are going, when they are leaving, and what time they will return.
