Carnis Poindexter was an American beloved local tennis coach and teacher, he passed away last Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at the age of 84 years old.

Carnis Poindexter’s cause of death has not been shared, however, due to his advanced age, his death cause might have been a natural one.

Carnis Poindexter grew up in northwest Roanoke, in 1957 he graduated from Lucy Addison High and in 1957 Poindexter joined Arkansas A.M. & N College (now the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff) on a tennis scholarship.

He won the ATA National Inter-Collegiate Singles Championship in 1959  and as unseeded player, in 1964 he won the Roanoke City Championship.

Carnis Poindexter started his coaching career in 1964 at Burley High where he started their first tennis team, he also coached at Jefferson Senior, Patrick Henry High Schools and Lucy Addison High.

In May 2018, Roanoke’s River’s Edge Sports Complex tennis facility was officially named the Carnis Poindexter Tennis Courts.

Poindexter was born on August 27, 1938 and died on September 21, 2022 at the age of 84 years old.  Carnis was of an American nationality and he belonged to the white ethnicity. His Zodiac sign was was Virgo.

Carnis Poindexter survived by his wife Vera Ruth, the couple shared a son named Clifton D. Poindexter. Carnis also had grandchildren who included Carnis Jawaun Calloway, Jamar Calloway, Shane Lytle, Brooklyn Lytle, Rushael Easterling, and Briana Hooks.
