Madelyn Cline’s got everyone talking following her performance in Rian Johnson’s highly praised sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. In the Netflix ensemble film, she plays Whiskey, a young influencer who gets caught up in a murder mystery after joining her boyfriend (Dave Bautista) on a Greek island weekend getaway.
Long before landing the role in Johnson’s latest film though, Cline was also already winning praise for her role in the Netflix series Outer Banks. And while the Southern Carolina native has been working on the show for years (its season 3 is scheduled to premiere soon), it turns out that Cline hasn’t watched much of it yet.
Madelyn Cline Was Cast In Outer Banks After A Few TV Guest Roles
A few years ago, Cline was a little-known actress who had small roles in series such as The Originals, Vice Principals, and Stranger Things. But that all changed when she got cast as Sarah Cameron in Outer Banks.
“It just happened so fast. I had maybe one or two auditions, and usually, for a series regular role on a show, you would imagine that you have to jump through hoops,” she recalled.
“Like, you’d have multiple first auditions, and then director sessions, and then producer sessions — usually you have to go through this entire process, but it was just two auditions, and then they offered the job. At first, I was just like, ‘Are you sure? Like, are you positive? I just don’t think you guys thought about this enough.’ But they were sure, and I was so excited that they were so passionate about me playing Sarah.”
That said, playing a character younger than her also came with some challenges. “There are parts of teenagehood that I get to relive and make right in my mind,” Cline pointed out.
“I’ve had many conversations with our writers and producers on how to make it feel very real and visceral to a young woman’s experience growing into adulthood. But you know, I’m now 24, almost 25, playing a 16-, 17-year-old. So there’s going to be some logic there that I don’t agree with. It can be a little chaotic.”
By the time Outer Banks premiered, much of the world had gone into lockdown. And for Cline, becoming famous overnight at that moment was quite a surreal experience.
“It’s an interesting dichotomy. I consider myself to be a very private person,” she said. “Sometimes the lack of anonymity really wigs me out. People think they know you because they know your character, when in reality, they’re two different people.”
After Three Seasons Of The Show, Cline Prefers Not To Watch Herself
Since her breakout moment on the show, Cline has continued to work on Outer Banks for three seasons.
And while the actress is devoted to the show, she also confessed that she can’t bear to watch it. “I can’t watch anymore of myself,” Cline confessed in a recent interview.

The actress also made a similar comment during a conversation with Glass Onion co-star Kathryn Hahn for Interview.
When Hahn revealed that she hasn’t seen the show yet, Cline said, “It’s okay. Sometimes I don’t even watch it.” In response, Hahn remarked, “Some people don’t love watching their own work.”
At the same time, Cline also confessed to being too critical of herself, something that doesn’t help when she goes over social media or visits various anonymous forums.
“What’s really infuriating is my own self-perception,” she said. “It’s like having a really mean baby in my mind.”
Here’s What Madelyn Cline Has Said About Outer Banks Season 3
And while Cline still isn’t finishing episodes of Outer Banks herself, she’s all about taking Sarah’s story wherever it goes.
Especially today, the actress is particularly excited about season 3. And she’s almost certain that the latest season will have some surprises in store for fans.
“I think there will be a lot of resolve for Sarah,” Cline once told E! News. “A lot of resolve and emotions towards her family. We haven’t seen her stand on her own two feet with her family for the last seasons, so we’re finally seeing that.”
At the same time, during a panel moderated by The Hollywood Reporter at the Sun Valley Film Festival, the actress also said, “I think it’s adrenaline. It’s gonna be as exciting as ever.”
Cline also spoke briefly about Sarah’s romantic relationships with both John B (Chase Stokes) and Topper (Austin North).
“As someone who consumes TV and movies, I love the will-they-won’t-they. I love that build-up to a relationship. I’m a sucker for a love triangle, and I genuinely love [Topper’s] arc, how you kind of redeemed yourself, and you come around, and Sarah’s like, ‘What do I do? I’m a horrible person.’ And then, obviously, her relationship with John B is so special and beautiful — that first true love is really wonderful,” the actress said.
“I also enjoy watching the pieces of some of the other relationships, and sometimes some relationships don’t work out. That’s very human — that’s just life, honestly. I enjoy watching that, and I love seeing it in the script. It’s a real page-turner for me. I love the drama.”
