Christina Aguilera and Bad Bunny to be honored at 2023 GLAAD Media Awards for LGBTQ+ 'allyship'

Christina Aguilera and Bad Bunny will be recognized at the upcoming 34th Annual GLAAD Media Awards for their support and ‘allyship’ in the LGBTQ+ community.

The Genie In The Bottle hitmaker, 42, and the talented Puerto Rican rapper, 28, will have a chance to accept the special awards during the ceremony next month on March 30 at the Beverly Hilton.

The Dakiti singer, who opened up the 65th Annual Grammys earlier Sunday, will be the recipient of the Vanguard Award, while the Burlesque actress will be honored with the Advocate for Change Award.

The GLAAD Awards brings the spotlight on, ‘those in the media who have shown exemplary achievements for fair, accurate, and inclusive representation of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect our lives,’ according to the official website. 

In a press release, Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD President and CEO, explained Christina is receiving her honor due to being, ‘a beloved icon who has inspired and shared messages of love for the LGBTQ community since the start of her music career.’

‘From using her voice to speak out against anti-LGBTQ legislation to creating songs and music videos that showcase LGBTQ love, Christina loudly and proudly raises the bar for what it means to be a LGBTQ ally today,’ Ellis continued. 

Last year in June, the Lady Marmalade songstress further discussed her allyship with the LGBTQ+ community when opening up to People. 

‘I’m all about people standing up for what they believe in, which is why I think the LGBTQ+ community feels connected to me,’ she expressed at the time. 

The talented performer further stated, ‘We’ve all come from struggle. We’ve all had to fight to be heard.’ She later explained that, ‘Being an LGBTQ+ ally is not something that’s short-lived. It’s in my DNA. Over the years, I’ve raised awareness about HIV and AIDS and helped families of victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting.’ 

The star notably headlined L.A. Pride last year, and informed the entertainment outlet that, ‘there’s nothing like performing for my LGBTQ+ fans.’ 

‘I feel safe with them to express myself however I want, whether it be through a huge ballad or something super sensual because they appreciate it all. I get to be as colorful and loud as I want to be. They’re my people.’ 

The Advocate for Change Award has been given to other celebrities in the past such as Madonna, who recently clapped back on comments in regards to her Grammys appearance. 

Bad Bunny will be honored with the Vanguard Award during next month’s ceremony, which is given to those, ‘who have made a significant difference in promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people and issues.’

‘Bad Bunny uses his role as one of the world’s most popular music artists to boldly shine a light on LGBTQ people and issues, including transgender equality and ending violence against trans women of color,’ the GLAAD President and CEO added in the press release. 

‘By consistently advocating for our community, elevating our stories, and demanding action from anti-LGBTQ leaders, Bad Bunny redefines the positive influence Latin music artists can have within the LGBTQ community, and has set an example for all artists.’ 

Other talented stars have been the recipient of the Vanguard Award in the past, such as Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and Elizabeth Taylor. 

The rapper, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, has made a recent new milestone by taking on the role of executive producer for the Netflix adaptation of Adam Silvera’s best-selling LGBTQ novel titled, They Both Die At The End, reported Deadline last month. 

The synopsis follows two teenage boys, Mateo and Rufus, who discover they both only have one day left to live, according to the outlet. 

The upcoming project comes from Chris Van Dusen, who is known for adapting the Bridgerton series, based on the books penned by Julia Quinn.

Bad Bunny previously received recognition during the 2023 Grammys held earlier Sunday, and won Best Música Album for Un Verano Sin Ti. 

According to Billboard, he gushed to the audience during his acceptance speech that he made, ‘this album with love and passion, nothing else.’ 

Another honoree at the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards includes The Inspection actor, Jeremy Pope, who will be the recipient of the Stephen F. Kolzak Award. 

The honor is, ‘presented to a LGBTQ media professional who has made a significant difference in raising visibility and promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people and issues.’
