“Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku” is a historical drama involving romance, action, and adventure set during the Tokugawa era. When it comes to the Tokugawa era, Japan was sealed off from the rest of the world and had a strict gradational social structure, which the anime only lightly mentions. Japan achieved internal concord throughout the Edo or Tokugawa era, though not without flaws. There are many manga and anime adaptations based on samurai, who were military soldiers during this time. Did you know that Tokyo used to be called Edo? the more you understand!

It continues Yamada Asaemon and Gabimaru’s story. As Yamada Asaemon is an executioner and Gabimaru is a ninja, you can see how the anime’s themes relate to the period in history. Together, these guys embarked on a perilous crusade—but more on that later. Because of its rich and compelling storyline and cast of characters, this Yuji Kaku manga attracted a huge following and was enjoyed by both reviewers and readers. Shueisha released “Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku” in 13 tankobon volumes after it ran as a weekly serial on Shonen Jump+.

Yuji Kaku’s manga “Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku,” which attracted MAPPA with its strong cast of characters and intriguing plot, is now getting an anime adaptation.

What is the Plot?

After being apprehended and given a death sentence, Gabimaru the Hollow is about to embark on a crusade. Right, it’s confusing. The only one who practices the prohibited art is Gabimaru. His body can withstand any type of lethal hit. Whatever happens, he won’t perish! What about setting him on fire? You already know the answer—he survived. How about using oxen to rip him apart? He survived yet another death! An untouchable prisoner, awesome. The executioner, Yamada Asaemon, decides to send Gabimaru to the depths of a dungeon because he views Gabimaru’s everlasting body as a blessing in disguise. Why, you inquire? The “elixir of life” can be found in these merciless dungeons. So, it is agreed to transfer prisoners to Shinsenkyo, a harsh society. Teams after teams of prisoners of war travel there, but none ever comes back.

More on Gabimaru, an Iwagakura-based ninja who believes that people are merely insects in comparison to other species. He has killed a lot of people and has no regrets. Gabimaru is a heartless man who despises life. He has no goals or desires because his parents died when he was only a baby. He never protested being put to death after he was apprehended after being betrayed by his allies. Yet, he has one small reason, his ray of hope—his dearly loved wife. She made him more receptive by being polite and loving. This is the story of Gabimaru. You must be as thrilled about this great animation as I am.
