It's Open Rebellion at CNN as Anchors, Staffers Praise Christiane Amanpour's Blistering Speech Against Network

If you’re CNN CEO Chris Licht, you’re not feeling very loved right now—at least not by your anchors and staffers. As we reported, veteran CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour ripped the network and specifically Licht during a commencement speech last week at the Columbia School of Journalism, saying that the Trump Town Hall was “an earthquake” and that she “respectfully disagree[d] with allowing Donald Trump to appear in that particular format.”

She also said she flew back from London to CNN’s New York headquarters to confront Licht over his decision to allow Orange Man Bad on the air and that the conversation was “robust.” While other CNN personalities such as Anderson Cooper, Oliver Darcy, and Jake Tapper also cried leftist tears over the event, Amanpour’s speech was probably the most high-profile critique.

Not only have none of these folks experienced any consequences for publicly ripping their own network and their boss, but they’re actually ramping up their efforts by promoting and praising Amanpour’s angry address. Darcy wrote an article praising Amanpour’s rant and claimed that “Inside CNN, Amanpour is far from alone in her views. In private, the town hall has been widely criticized by employees at all levels across the organization.”

Others at CNN quickly shared it, including CNN chief international investigative correspondent Nima Elbagir:

“Speaking truth to power is a fundamental part of our job but to speak truth to the power that signs your checks? ⁦@amanpour showing everyone how it’s done,” Elbagir wrote.By “speaking truth to power,” Elbagir meant it’s ok to stick it to the boss because we’re bigger than him. It’s clear that others agreed:

That tweet was shared by CNN anchor Erica Hill, podcast producer David Rind, CNN International producer Claudia Rebaza, journalist and producer Alicia Lloyd and investigative journalist Gianluca Mezzofiore. It was also liked by CNN special correspondent Jamie Gangel, senior national correspondent Ed Lavandera, journalists Vasco Cotovio and Zamira Rahim, producer Sandy Thin, documentary producer Mattie Reynard and breaking news writer Sana Noor Haq.

But that’s not all—the tweet was liked by a long list of on-air personalities and staffers:

Among other CNN staffers who liked Sidner’s tweet include Tapper, CNN communications exec Lauren Cone, senior publicist Kamilla Rahman, national security correspondent Josh Campbell, legal analyst, Elie Honig, medical correspondent Meg Tirrell, investigative reporter Majlie de Puy Kamp, climate change writer Rachel Ramirez, CNN Business senior writer Jeanne Sahadi, reporter Jasmine Wright, senior audience writer Christina Zdanowicz, “Who’s Talking with Chris Wallace” executive producer Javier de Diego,”CNN This Morning” associate producer Emily McNulty, senior director Roxanne Garcia-Bell, producer Andrea Lewis, associate producer Sara Smart, field producer Lauren Koenig, product designer Christian Eckels, and booker Kelly Rice Carre.

I would bet that if you didn’t retweet it or like it, you’d feel very alone working at CNN right now. Anchor Sara Sidner makes her position clear with this post:

It’s been a rough couple of years for “the most trusted name in news,” as their ratings are in the toilet, they’ve fired hacks like Don Lemon, Brian Stelter, and Chris Cuomo, and lost their leader Jeff Zucker to a sex scandal. While Chris Licht was brought on to right the ship, nothing has gone well for him and now he has an open rebellion on his hands.

Since apparently, employees at CNN are able to trash their own company and its CEO with no repercussions, it’s clear that the inmates are running the asylum.
