Katy Perry has had a very successful career and many of her songs are iconic, to say the least. Fans of the singer will be more than aware of how out-there her outfits in particular are, which only adds to her charm as a performer and certainly makes her stand out from everyone else.
However, despite her success, it appears that there is one group of people who are more than familiar with Katy and don’t actually approve of her success. They say your family are your biggest critics and Katy’s are very clearly like that as even though she has achieved many things throughout her career, they still aren’t proud of her.
Who Are Katy Perry’s Parents?
Katy’s parents’ jobs are completely different from that of the singer, and they are both Pentecostal preachers. Her dad is also an author, motivational speaker, and life coach. Due to the work they do, Katy’s upbringing was certainly unique and set her on a path that she has tried hard to forget.
Where her music is quite different from others in the industry, it also appears that her upbringing was quite different too. Given that her parents were both pastors, Katy grew up in an Evangelical household that was very strict.
There were various words she wasn’t allowed to say, the only book she was allowed to read was the Bible and the only music she was allowed to listen to was the Sister Act soundtrack, which is very far removed from the music she creates today.
She also didn’t have much of an education as she left school at 15 to pursue her career in music. Whilst this may have had a helping hand in the work she does today, the music she was performing then was very different from the music she performs now.
Do Katy Perry’s Parents Approve Of Her Career?
Whenever someone is in the spotlight, as long as it’s for good, you would think that their family and friends would be proud of them for their achievements.
However, as far as Katy’s family is concerned, this couldn’t be further from the truth. While they have their reasons for this, it’s still surprising that the family of one of the most famous female singers on the planet wouldn’t be proud of her success.
Fans of Katy may not know that she grew up in a very Christian household and that due to this upbringing, she actually started out her career in the Christian music scene. Due to this strict upbringing, her parents have very different views as to what is and isn’t acceptable compared to most other people.

One example of one of Katy’s songs that her parents might not be the biggest fans of is ‘I Kissed A Girl’. Her parents’ religious background discourages homosexuality, and it’s more than likely they weren’t fans of one of the songs that made their daughter famous.
In an interview on the Today program, Katy outlined why her parents aren’t proud of her. She said that while there are some things they are fine with, they mostly disagree with a lot of what she does and have expressed their wishes that she would go on to do other things.
Whilst it’s probably no secret that their reaction would naturally upset Katy, as she has said how much she loves her parents, she also mentioned in the interview that even though it has taken her some time, she has learned how to handle their reactions.
She explained in the interview that whenever her parents show any form of discouragement towards her career, she will mention to them that they are all completely different people and makes it clear to them that her intentions are pure with what she’s doing, so as not to worry about it too much.
Despite the fact that they don’t agree with a lot of what she does, particularly regarding her career, they never disowned her like some parents might and Katy has said that they still love her as her daughter and that they have always prayed for her her entire life.
What Is Katy Perry’s Relationship Like With Her Parents Today?
It still seems as though Katy has some sort of relationship with her parents as there is nothing to suggest otherwise. Her parents were even encouraging her to pursue a career in music at first; although, this was when they thought she would become a Christian music singer.
In 2016, her dad even preached a number of different lectures, where he denounced Katy’s career, said that her concerts are painful, and he weeps over them because he doesn’t like that the people who attended were there due to their adoration for Katy and weren’t there for God.
While their relationship certainly seems somewhat strained, they do still have a relationship and it at least appears from Katy’s side that there is no love lost.
