In early April 2023, Entertainment Tonight reported that Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn had split up after six years of dating. A source exclusively told the outlet that the two had parted ways.
The breakup reportedly happened a few weeks before Entertainment Tonight shared the news, but “it was not dramatic.” Many fans took this to mean that the breakup occurred before Swift embarked on her stadium tour.

“The relationship had just run its course,” the source revealed. “It’s why [Alywn] hasn’t been spotted at any shows [at Swift’s The Eras tour].”

Swift released the song on CD while on The Eras tour. The song is not currently available on streaming, but lyrics can be found online.
The song as a whole tells the story of a failing relationship, specifically if Swift should stay to fix the relationship or leave altogether.
“Do I throw out everything we built or keep it? / I’m getting tired,” she says in the song.
The chorus repeats the notion “Stop, you’re losing me” several times.
One line in particular that is drawing attention occurs in the bridge. Swift sings, “I’m the best thing at this party / And I wouldn’t marry me either.”
Fans are attaching this lyric to the previous rumors of an engagement between Swift and Alwyn. Fans are speculating again that perhaps a marriage was on the table, but either Swift or Alwyn turned down the proposal.
Swift has yet to confirm that the song is about her breakup with Alwyn or that a turned down proposal was the reason for their split.
The singer has quickly moved on from her long-term relationship with Alwyn and is reportedly now dating Matt Healy.
