A 15-year-old girl has died in a horror crash when the stolen car she was in – being driven by another teen girl – slammed into a truck in rural Victoria.

A 14-year-old girl was behind the wheel of a Holden Captiva that collided with a truck on the Hume Highway in Locksley at about 8.30am on Wednesday.

The teen driving sustained upper body pain in the crash and was flown to hospital.

The 15-year-old, who was in the front seat, died at the scene.

A 12-year-old boy also inside the car was taken to Royal Children’s Hospital in a stable condition.

The 45-year-old truck driver was not hurt and is assisting police with their investigation of the incident.

The car and the truck were heading in the same direction.

It’s understood the vehicle crashed into the right side of the truck’s rear.

Superintendent Michael Layton said the Holden Captiva was driving ‘erratically’ on the highway and police were on the search for it before the crash.

‘Quite tragically, before police had the opportunity to intervene the collision was reported,’ he said.

He explained that the three teenagers in the Captiva were from the Wangaratta area and knew each other and the vehicle they were driving was reported stolen from a home in the Wangaratta area just before midnight on Tuesday.

The 14-year-old girl who was behind the wheel of the car is expected to be charged.

‘Undoubtedly, there will be consequences from today’s event,’ Mr Layton said.

‘This is a tragic scene and high risk-taking behaviour by youths. It’s totally avoidable and I’d also say it’s probably the worst nightmare of every parent who might be dealing with rebellious teens and young people.’

Victoria Police said in a statement: ‘Police are currently on scene investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and the investigation remains ongoing.’

Anyone with information about the crash or dashcam footage has been urged to contact police.
