Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – London Jeremiah Sims, 19, was sentenced this week to 30 days in jail and three years of probation after pleading nolo contendere to charges of possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of a short-barreled rifle.

Sims, who had no criminal record before the arrest, was originally charged in April with possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of a short-barreled rifle, possession of a concealed firearm without a permit, and carrying a concealed firearm during the commission of a felony after a traffic stop led to a search that produced 1012.7 grams of marijuana, a concealed handgun within reach of Sims, and a short-barreled AR-style rifle in the trunk of the car.

Formal charges of possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of a short-barreled rifle were filed in May, and Sims entered pleas of nolo contendere to those charges this week; the plea document states that the maximum sentence for the charges is 30 years.

As part of the plea deal, Sims was adjudicated guilty on the charges and sentenced to 30 days in jail, with credit for 20 days served, plus 36 months of probation, with the two sentences running concurrently. He also must serve 200 hours of community service and pay court costs. Judge William Davis accepted the plea deal. The prosecutor on the case was Assistant State Attorney Meredith Poisson, and Sims was represented by Assistant Public Defender Canaan Goldman.
