A Minnesota man has been arrested in the suspected hit-and-run death of his wife, who was mysteriously found dead on a highway last month, authorities said.

Tony James McClelland, 47, was jailed on second-degree murder and criminal vehicular homicide charges in connection with the death of his 49-year-old wife, Angela Marie McClelland, whose body turned up along a roadway in Fort Ripley Township in late June, according to the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office.

“Investigators have been working on the case putting the pieces together to the fatal events leading up to the death of the victim,” the sheriff said in a statement on July 10.

A motive in the suspected domestic murder hasn’t yet been released. Officials said the couple had lived together at their Fort Ripley home.

Police said a passerby first reported seeing what appeared to be a body lying near the intersection of Fort Ripley Township’s Legend Lane and Killian Road shortly before 6 a.m. on June 25. The remains were later positively identified as belonging to Angela McClelland. Investigators stated at the time that they suspected the Minnesota woman had been killed as a result of being “struck by a vehicle.”

Tony McClelland was booked into a Crow Wing County Jail. It’s unclear if he’s retained a defense attorney to comment on his behalf.

Angela McClelland was born in Aurora, Minnesota, according to her obituary. Her family said she’ll be remembered for her “warm heart,” “uncanny lucky streaks” and her “immense and unconditional love” for her dogs.

“Angie was a contradiction in terms of that sometimes she was shy and quiet and other times she was loud, eccentric, and often the center of those that gathered around her,” McClelland’s obituary stated. “People naturally flocked to Angie.”

The obituary also described McClelland and her husband, Tony McClelland as “inseparable.” It added that the couple, who enjoyed traveling and spending time outdoors together, were married at a Little White Chapel in Las Vegas in 2011.

“Angie will be deeply missed by her husband, Tony,” her obituary added.

“Together they spent time relaxing around campfires in the summer, hunted the Northland in the fall, enjoyed ice fishing in the winters, and maintained a beautiful home as the flowers grew in the early spring. Angie especially loved to spend quality time with Tony taking trips around that lake on their pontoon in the evenings. The fourth of July was their favorite holiday to gather with friends and family.”

No other details were immediately provided by law enforcement. Oxygen.com has reached out to the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office for more information.
