A Michigan teenager who doused her sleeping father with chemical drain cleaner nearly two years ago, resulting in chemical burns he eventually died from, was released from jail following her sentencing.

Megan Joyce Imirowicz, 19, was handed a sentence of one year in prison with credit for time served for the 2021 death of her 64-year-old father, Konrad Imirowicz. She was released from an Oakland County detention center on Tuesday, according to online jail records obtained by Oxygen.com

Imirowicz, who had been in custody since her arrest in October 2021, was found guilty last month of domestic violence and unlawful possession or use of harmful devices or irritants causing death in connection with the case.

On October 1, 2021, prosecutors say Imirowicz, angered that her father was allegedly drunk and couldn’t drive her to a hair appointment on her 18th birthday, threw lye on the man while he slept, NBC News reported.

Officials accused Imirowicz of later abandoning her unconscious father at the home. He was later found by a neighbor with chemical burns throughout his body. Konrad died in a hospital after being removed from life support roughly five months after the attack.

Imirowicz had faced the prospect of up to life behind bars and a possible fine of $40,000, according to prosecutors.

“This was not the sentence we advocated for, however the judge ultimately decides what sentence will be imposed,” David Williams, Oakland County Chief Assistant Prosecutor, told Oxygen.com in a statement on Wednesday.

Prior to Imirowicz’s sentencing, her family had written letters to the judge urging a lenient sentence, according to Court TV. The 19-year-old openly wept as she addressed the court at her sentencing Tuesday, describing her father, Konrad, as her “hero” and “friend,” Court TV reported.

“Nineteen years ago, I was placed into the arms of the first man to ever love me, the man I’m lucky enough to call my dad,” Imirowicz told the court. “Growing up he became so much more, he was a storyteller, a tooth fairy, a friend, and hero, and through it all the one thing never changed, was that he was mine. One of the biggest things overlooked in this case is that me and my siblings lost our dad, too. That loss has severely broken us.”

Imirowicz, who openly begged the judge for mercy, told the court she aspired to study marine biology in college and wished to work with children battling depression.

“I want to change the world,” she said. “I’m asking you to help me accomplish my dreams. I’m not a threat to society, but an asset for the future.”

The 19-year-old was seen leaving jail hours after her sentencing with two siblings and a friend.

“I’m really happy I get to go home with my family,” Imirowicz said. “I’m scared to feel anything about my dad right now. I miss him a lot. I’m not ready.”
